What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy works on the principles that the body functions as a unit. This means that each and every part needs to work well together to maintain optimal health and function. It is when something is dysfunctional, that the body tends to compensate for this. Usually is will cope up until a certain point, and that’s when symptoms tend to arise, and not necessarily in the tissue causing the problem.

Osteopaths also believe that “Structure governs function” meaning that without an appropriate structure, the function of that structure is compromised. We also believe that the body is capable of self-healing mechanisms. Therefore as Osteopaths, we are not “fixing” you, simply assisting the body in remembering what normal should feel like, and then allowing it to go ahead and integrate, and ‘self-heal’.

Like any profession, there is variation. All of the practitioners at Melville Osteopathy use a wide range of techniques in a typical session, including soft tissue massage to tight muscles, tendons, specific joint articulation and manipulative techniques, muscle energy technique, visceral, fascial release techniques and cranio-sacral osteopathy.

What can an Osteopath treat?

Osteopathy can help you and your family with musculoskeletal problems such as:

  • back pain
  • neck/ shoulder pain
  • sciatica
  • knee pain
  • headaches
  • Common injuries such as repetitive strain injuries, tennis elbow, tendinitis
  • poor posture
  • Arthritis related pain
  • Gut disturbances and menstrual pain
  • Pain during or post pregnancy
  • in babies & children, birth trauma, head moulding / mishape, reflux, and colic
  • Poor energy and sleep patterns
    .
    What happens in a treatment?

When you come in for your first treatment, your Osteopath will take a case history of your current symptoms and previous medical details. Then an assessment is made on how your body is moving and how your joints, muscles and other tissues feel. After this, we will have a better idea of the cause of your problem, and continue to treat you. This may involve a range of techniques including soft tissue massage, joint articulation, specific joint manipulation and more. At the end of the treatment we may give you some home stretching exercises to help with short and long term management and improve your overall condition.

Do i need a GP referral?

No. Osteopaths are primary practitioners; however we welcome any GP referrals or Enhanced Primary Care Program referrals and are happy to work in conjunction with other practitioners to aid in overall management.

Can i claim with my private health insurance?

Yes you can claim Osteopathic treatments. Usually you will need extras in your fund; however different funds vary with what they offer! Best to confirm with your fund on rebate amounts, as this can vary also. We have HICAPS, meaning you can claim from your treatment on the spot, and pay the gap only.

How much treatment will i need?

Every person is different in their presenting problem and therefore the amount of treatment they will require varies also. Usually a problem that is acute in nature will need 2-3 treatments. Chronic problems may take more treatment, depending on your overall health and well-being, your response to treatment and lifestyle factors. However these presentations can usually be managed with a maintenance treatment every month or two once stabilized.

    How much will treatment cost?

Initial consultation: $95.00 (approx 1 hour)
Follow up consultation: $75.00 (approx 40 minutes)
You may be eligible for a rebate from you private health insurance.

HICAPS, EFTPOS AND CCARD FACILITIES available.
