SERVICES

Welcome to Waterways Osteopathy

Dr. Kate Doak (previously Kate Cromb) graduated from RMIT in 1995 after completing a five year Bachelor of applied Science in Osteopathy. She worked at an osteopathic practice in Windsor NSW for two years gaining valuable experience through working alongside experienced practitioners. After returning to Melbourne Kate worked in a mixed medical / osteopathic practice for one year. After gaining experience in these practices she established Arcadia Health in Ripponlea and practiced from 1998 to 2007. Arcadia Health was comprised of a mixed practice including naturopathy, acupuncture, massage and traditional Chinese medicine. The practice allowed Kate to gain valuable knowledge of different therapies assisting with achievement of more holistic outcomes for patients.

After taking maternity leave from practice, Kate has now established Waterways Osteopathy, where she uses all of her past experience to offer high quality assessment, treatment and advice to clients.

Kate excels in the treatment and management of musculoskeletal injuries of all ages. Kate has a special interest in women’s health, pregnancy and post pregnancy injury. About back pain

There are many different reasons for back pain including; occupational strain, lifting strains, car accidents/whiplash, falls, direct impact injury, pregnancy strains and childbirth injury. Some causes are clear while others occur for seemingly no reason, or a minor strain. Usually back pain can be traced back to an injury or strain from years prior. This is why Osteopaths take a thorough history of each client to understand all the contributing factors causing pain, then target treatment and advice to individual needs.

How back strain occurs

Pain doesn’t always occur immediately after injury because the body is very clever at adapting and accommodating strains and stresses. However, strain can build up to a level where the body can no longer compensate. The disruption to spinal biomechanics through layering strains hits a ‘breaking point’ and symptoms begin, often insidiously or after a minor incident. Pain can be triggered by physical exertion, emotional stress or illness. Osteopaths understand this layering of strain on the body and treatment is designed to target the area of pain and other contributing areas. The long term outcome is much more effective and complete.

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy can be best described as hands on remedial therapy that focuses on bringing health to all aspects of the physical body; the joints, muscles, bones and connective tissue, with ‘hands on’ treatment such as massage, stretching, articulation, manipulation and gentle techniques like cranial and functional techniques. Treatment improves the functioning of the nervous, circulatory, hormonal, and lymphatic systems which boosts immunity and health and vitality of the whole person. Osteopaths give valuable advice on posture, stretching, strengthening/ Pilates, exercise and diet.

What is an Osteopath?

All Australian Osteopathic practitioners complete a 5 year intensive university degree and are government registered.

Is Osteopathy new?

Dr A.T. Still a medical physician and engineer began Osteopathy in1872. He believed that the body was a dynamic being with the ability to heal itself under suitable conditions. He developed a successful system for stimulating the immune and self healing mechanisms within the body naturally. He eliminated drugs and considered surgery a last resort for treatment. Since then osteopathy has grown and developed, based on the strong foundation that started from an exceptional man with foresight.
