About Sylvia
Specialist Psychologist. B.Psych, M.Psych, MAPS
My name is Sylvia Johnstone and I’m a Specialist Psychologist in Counselling Psychology. I am also an experienced relationships counsellor and psychotherapist. My journey as a psychologist stemmed from a personal tragedy at the age of 18 when I first experienced the profound experience of grief. Since then, I went down the path of intense personal therapy and personal development which also conicided with my studies in psychology. I have been practising as a psychologist in Perth, Western Australia since my completion of Master degree in Psychology in 2002.
Professional background
Prior to starting private practice, I worked as a counsellor in goverenment and non governent agencies.
These include organisations like Relationships Australia and SECCA (Sexuality, Education Counselling and Consultancy Agency). This has given extensive knowledge in the areas of different types of relationship issues, sexual problems and communication breakdowns. My goal is to help couples to become “unstuck” in their relationships and reconnect again on a more meaningful and deeper level. I had also worked in a medical centre as an independent psychologist providing medicare funded psychological services. I continue to work alongside with many GPs in care of their patients.
Areas of specialisations
My approach in counselling and psychotherapy is to fully understand who you are as a person.
In addition to relationship or marriage counselling, I also specialise in the treatment of depression, anxiety, post- traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, post natal depression and prolonged bereavement in adults, adolescents and children. My approach in counselling and psychotherapy is to fully understand who you are as a person, and how your childhood may have impacted on the way you feel about yourself, and the world around you. From there, we can then work together to nurture aspects of yourself that was missing or lacking in your early developmental years. As part of my on going commitment in delivering best psychological practice, I regularly attend professional supervision, professional development courses and workshops in latest psychological treatment. I am currently undergoing a three year professional training in Hakomi Psychotherapy which is a mindfulness based and body integrative experiential psychotherapy.
Professional Membership
I am a Medicare accredited psychologist and accredited provider of Private Health Insurance Funds.
I am also a member of the Australian Psychological Society. I am available for counselling Mondays to Fridays. I shall look forward to hearing from you and may peace be with you! QUALIFICATION DETAILS
