Chinese Medicine in the modern world

In the last century breakthroughs in modern medicine have taken the world to a new operating platform allowing the focus of everyday healthcare to shift from survival to quality of life and well-being. In this environment, Chinese Medicine is not only very relevant in it's ability to support and improve quality of life, but also in its effectiveness in treating the new breed of illness born of modern living - the sub-optimum health illness with "no known cause" such as sub-fertility, auto immune and stress related disorders.

What can it treat?
Auto-immune disorders - Eczema and other Skin diseases, Multiple allergies, Hayfever, MS
Stress related disorders - Sub-fertility, Anxiety, Depression, IBS, Fatigue, Insomnia, Muscular tension, Nervous tension, Headaches, Period pain.
Fertility disorders - Low sperm count, Poor sperm motility, Poor sperm form, Disrupted ovulation, Poor egg quality, Hormonal irregularities, Endometriosis.
Pregnancy discomforts - Morning sickness, Back pain, Constipation, Heartburn, Breech presentation, Low Iron, Fatigue etc
General - Colds and Flu, Poor sleep, Low energy, Digestive upset, Tight muscles, RSI, Injuries

How does it work?
The most important concept in Chinese Medicine is balance. When the body is out of balance, health is displaced and illness and disease can manifest. If the imbalance results in a blockage, a deficiency, heat or cold, it would need to be cleared, replenished, cooled or warmed as needed for health to be re-established.

This Months Article in Focus: Pre-Conception Care

Do you want to have a baby?

If your goal is to have a baby next year then you need to be preparing now.

Conceiving and carrying a baby to term is a big job for your body so it makes sense that the healthier you are the easier it will be.

That’s where Chinese Medicine comes in - helping you be in the best shape possible from conceiving to breast-feeding.

Your body’s needs:

Conception: Before you start trying you don’t know whether you’ll be able to fall pregnant quickly and easily or whether it will take longer and require changes to your (or your partners) body to ensure the right internal environment needed for conception can be achieved.

Pregnancy: When you do conceive, you’ve got nine months ahead of supporting a growing baby and adapting to intense hormonal and physical changes (such as pelvic and musculature movement).

Labour: After 9 months, you’ll go into labour and need all your available stores of energy, focus and perseverance.

Breast-feeding: After the birth of your child, a breast-feeding newborn at home is extremely demanding on your body’s reserves and will keep you more than occupied for the months ahead as your body continues to change and recover with less than normal sleep.

Preconception care with Chinese Medicine will optimise your health and well-being and support your body through these stages while also addressing any specific areas of concern or discomforts (back pain, heartburn, constipation, breech presentation etc) you may experience.

If you are planning to have a baby in the next 1-2 years, get started now and enjoy the benefits of a healthier, happier you for conception and pregnancy.

Acupuncturist and Herbalist Siegrid Delaney specialises in Preconception care, Fertility and Obstetrics and will tailor a treatment program (including lifestyle recommendations and dietary coaching) to suit your individual needs.

How can Acupuncture Impact Fertility?

For women trying to fall pregnant, acupuncture and herbal medicine have been found to:

Regulate the female menstrual cycle
To ensure energy and blood are sufficient to support a healthy pregnancy.

Stimulate and balance fertility hormones responsible for:
- optimal ovulation
- optimal fertile mucous production
- thickening of the uterine lining

Encourage embryo implantation and support IVF and ICSI.
Studies have found that when acupuncture is administered before and after embryo implantation in assisted reproduction, the rate of successful pregnancy is increased by 42.5%¹

Reduce stress and increase relaxation.
Trying to conceive can be a stressful and emotionally trying endeavour which has a negative impact on fertility. Acupuncture helps you to relax and mange these fears.

1. Paulus WE, et al, ‘Influence of acupuncture on the pregnancy rate in patients who undergo assisted reproduction therapy,’ Fertility and Sterility, April 2002.

If you have been trying to fall pregnant but found it to be more difficult to conceive than you had hoped, it's very likely that treatment with Chinese medicine will be able to assist you to achieve your goal.

It is important to remember however that a man's sperm can be affected by diet, environment and lifestyle as much as a woman's hormones and monthly cycle so both partners will need to be on board for any treatment to be a success.

I started seeing Siegrid when I was 6 weeks pregnant for all day morning sickness and low energy. After only a few treatments I wasn't as sick as often and I was much better at coping with a busy day.
Siegrid makes the experience so relaxing and enjoyable you can't wait for the next session. I felt physically and emotionally stronger after every treatment.
The pre-birth preparation is amazing. My son was born in 2hrs 45mins drug free! Everything that I was hoping for!
