Osteopathy

Can Osteopathy Help You?

The Osteopaths at Williamstown Osteopathy have been trained for five years to effectively diagnose alterations in the body framework than can lead to dysfunction and pain. Using gentle yet effective hands on techniques they work to treat the cause of pain, not just the symptoms.
This approach makes osteopathic treatment not only safe but enjoyable for people of all ages.
Quite often the cause of pain can originate from the activities of everyday life such as poor posture or lifting techniques. The osteopaths at WOHS also help to educate patients on how to avoid a re-occurrence of pain in the future.

What techniques do Osteopaths use?

Manipulative Osteopathy:
is a ‘whole body’ system of manual medicine, based on unique biomechanical principles. The osteopath uses a wide range of techniques such as massage, stretching, trigger point therapy, and joint manipulation to enhance the body’s natural ability to self-regulate and self-heal.

Biodynamic Osteopathy:
biodynamic osteopaths are trained to feel a very subtle, rhythmical change that is present in all body tissues. Known as primary respiratory motion, this intuitive force is capable of restoring health in the patient. Through disciplined study and a refined sense of touch, the Osteopath is able to sense and cooperate with the intention of these forces to promote healing in the patient.

What conditions do Osteopaths treat?
Sports injuries – tendonitis, tennis or golfers elbow, shin splints
    Arthritic pain and stiffness
Spinal pain – new and old injuries, disc problems, joint pain, pelvic and abdominal instability, scoliosis
Neck pain – tension, whiplash, wry neck
Headaches/migraines, tension and/or neck related headaches, jaw dysfunction
Referred pain – sciatica, aching/numbness in arms
Overuse syndromes – ie. RSI of the forearms, and postural pain in the upper back
    Pregnancy related pain
Elderly – general physical pain and stiffness

Many mothers-to-be find Osteopathic treatment very beneficial to reduce back pain during pregnancy and also to help prepare the body for birth.

We also have a specially designed pregnancy table top, that allows women to lie comfortably face down whilst being treated by our therapists.

In addition, our osteopaths specialise in a wide variety of gentle non-manipulative techniques for use on children

Our Osteopaths

Dr Cliff Butler
Cliff Butler commenced osteopathic practice in 2003 after completing five years study, including a masters degree, at Victoria University. Cliff has been fortunate to work in extremely successful clinics in Hobart & Melbourne. Cliff has now established Williamstown Osteopathy & Health Services with the aim of providing the community with the highest standard of cutting edge health care in the west.

Cliff’s osteopathic interests are wide and varied, treating professional golfers and weekend warriors to mothers to be and children. A strong foundation in structural diagnosis and treatment forms the basis of Cliff’s practice; his more recent interests include cranio-sacral osteopathy and the results it can achieve in his patients.

Myotherapy

Myotherapy is the assessment, treatment and management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

It is a method for relieving pain based on the application of pressure at trigger points throughout the body. Trigger points are defined as hypersensitive places in the muscles that cause pain in response to undue stress. They may be triggered by occupational or other injuries as well as by disease, physical stress, and emotional stress.

Myotherapy is founded on the notion that relief of tension in the muscle followed by revitalisation of the relieved muscle through stretching, promotes healing and reduces ongoing pain.

What conditions do Myotherapists treat?
  • Sporting & occupational injuries
  • Stiffness & pain associated with poor posture
  • Acute & chronic conditions affecting function & mobility
  • Headaches / migraines
  • Acute and chronic stiff and painful neck
  • Chronic overuse syndromes - tendonitis, RSI, tennis/golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel
  • Acute & chronic back pain / 'sciatica
  • Shoulder pain, frozen shoulder
  • Knee, leg & foot pain – shin splints, patella tracking dysfunction, runners knee, ankle sprains
  • Pregnancy – pre/post natal complaints
  • Pain & dysfunction associated with stress & tension
  • Rehabilitative stage of an injury

What techniques do Myoptherapists use?

Remedial massage, Soft tissue manipulation, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial dry needling, Myofascial release, Cupping, Postural assessment and correction, Corrective exercises (stretches, strength).

Our Myotherapist

Melinda Atkinson is our friendly and experienced myotherapist and remedial massage therapist. Since graduating in 2007, her focus has centred on treatment and rehabilitation of sports and occupational injuries.

Melinda has worked in various clinical settings, working closely alongside Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths, and other allied health practitioners. This experience has allowed Melinda to have a better understanding of how health care professionals can work in conjunction to provide the best possible treatment plan to suit the individuals needs.

Remedial Massage

Working with the soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments; remedial massage can be helpful in treating specific areas of muscle tension caused by stress or injury. Incorporating deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, PNF stretching, joint mobilisation and myofascial release our therapists aim to provide symptom relief whilst revitalising the whole body.

Naturopathy

Naturopathy includes the practice of nutrition, herbal medicine and homoeopathy. Naturopathy places an emphasis on a preventative approach to healing and treating the cause/s of a disease state. Naturopathy is much more than simply replacing drugs with natural remedies. Effective, healing and cleansing natural medicines are utilised to promote wellness and prevent disease by stimulating the body's own immune and healing responses.
