About Reflexology
Reflexology is a safe, non-invasive, and non-threatening Complementary Therapy, its origins dating back over many thousands of years. It works on the principle that areas on the hands, feet, and ears that have an energetic relationship – a “reflex” - with an organ, system, or structure of the body. By stimulating with alternating levels of pressure the body is activated to clear energy channels that may be blocked, bringing the body back into balance.
Reflexology is a therapy that utilizes the sense of touch. The aim of a treatment session is to activate the body’s own innate individual powers of healing of the body, mind, and spirit.
The main benefits experienced by people who have Reflexology are:
- Reduction of stress levels, thereby increasing general coping mechanisms,
- Improved energy levels,
- Increased sense of well being and vitality,
- Improved sleeping patterns,
- Improvements in the flow of lymph,
- Improved foot mobility,
- Improved circulation,
- Deep relaxation.
Together, these benefits appear to contribute alleviation of many common problems of an acute and chronic nature including:
- Headaches,
- Skin problems,
- Indigestion, flatulence,
- Constipation, diarrhoea,
- Back, hip, leg, shoulder, neck, arm aches,
- Sciatica,
- General nervous tension,
- General pain and discomfort.
Reflexology can be considered a powerful therapy in the treatment of stress and related disorders due to its ability to provide a deeply calming state of relaxation and general feeling of well being.
Research has shown that it can help in reducing the symptomatic problems associated with many disorders.
It can be beneficial to everybody: from babies, children, adolescents, adults, to the elderly.
Reflexology is practised worldwide:
- In China, Denmark, and the UK it has been fully integrated into the national health system.
- In China it has been accepted by the Central Government and is administered by the “barefoot doctors”. There, it is accepted as a means of preserving health, and for the prevention and curing of disease.
- there are 15-20,000 members practicing in the UK with 1.5 million visits annually. Here it has been found that doctors who manage their own budgets find that they can save substantially on their drugs bill by employing a Reflexologist.
- In Denmark there are more Reflexologists than doctors, and they are employed in many medical settings including hospitals and IVF clinics, and by large corporations who have found that productivity has increased and paid sick leave has been reduced through employee programs sponsoring use of Reflexology for their staff.
- In South Africa it is now being used in the Burns Unit at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, and research is being performed on HIV/Aids patients at the Helen Joseph Hospital.
- In the US it is in use on a widespread basis. There, Reflexology is currently used in drug and dependency programs, alcohol rehabilitation, and in Ohio at the Rehabilitation Centre of Neurological Development it is included in their program of sensory - motor exercises.
- In Paraguay, Reflexology is recognised by the government and training is connected to the University’s medical program controlled by the Health Ministry.
- Reflexology is also being used in the Philippines, having been endorsed by the government as a low cost health care system.
- In Australia, it is now recognised by most Health Insurers as an effective tool in the management of an individuals health and rebates are applicable for treatment fees where a patient has the appropriate insurance coverage.
