“My philosophy of healing is to take the time to uncover all aspects of my client’s wellbeing, not just to treat the symptoms, but to seek out and remove the underlying causes of the illness. There is seldom one causative factor in disease.”

What is my background?

My medical background began with a nursing degree, specializing in maternity nursing. From those early years I had always held an interest in nutrition, reading the works of pioneering nutritionist, Adele Davis. My experiences revealed that there are also psycho-emotional roots of disease. I completed a degree in psychology. For fifteen years I travelled a lot and have worked in many hospitals in many different fields of medicine. Those opportunities have given me an appreciation of the benefits of orthodox medicine, but at the same time ignited my passion for healing the natural way. After completing my studies in naturopathy in 2004, I have been working towards further blending the best of medicine with the best of naturopathy.

What techniques do I use to help you heal?

Apart from traditional herbal medicine and nutritional advice, I also use homeopathy, iridology, and kinesiology. Your initial consultation might include a live blood analysis (analyse a drop of your blood under a microscope). Blood tests might be requested if necessary to diagnose any problems with cholesterol, blood sugar regulation, hormone levels, thyroid function, immune function, food allergies, and nutritional deficiencies.

What do you, the patient, need?

As a patient seeking a good naturopath you need to find someone who has the time to use their diagnostic ability and experience to get to the bottom of the problem. It is not enough to treat the symptoms of an illness without getting to the underlying cause. Sometimes a disease process began many years before the current symptoms appeared. One example of this is when a patient tells me they “have never been quite as well since a bout of flu they had 5 years ago”. Their treatment may have included very strong antibiotics and steroids that did seem to fix their chest infection but had unknowingly created other problems. Even then, their “flu” may have been created by another problem that was left undiagnosed. Food allergies, for example, are a very common cause of sinusitis, dermatitis, irritable bowel, and even depression. Food plays a major role in health and disease!

Knowing how the body works has always held fascination for me. I have studied it from a medical point of view, and then from a naturopathic angle. As a naturopath it is my role to explain to my patients how their body works, and how to help it heal. I love teaching, and have taught nursing subjects at Prince Charles Hospital in the 80s and now continue to lecture at TAFE in natural medicine and nursing subjects.

What do I specialize in?

I specialize in holistic health for men, women and children. The majority of my patients are women, seeking solutions to problems with their hormones and their weight. Once they understand that no part of their body is isolated from the rest, they realise that a good practitioner treats the whole body, not simply specializes in one part. All bodies, whether young or old, male or female, benefit enormously from the same effective holistic treatment.
I have had 30 years experience in the medical profession, initially as a registered nurse and midwife, and then as a naturopath. During these years I have continually updated my knowledge through holding a teaching/lecturing role in both fields.

Feeling passionate about bring health and wellbeing to my patients, I derive great pleasure in sharing all that I have learnt. This is the primary aim of naturopathy, i.e. to teach you, the patient, how to manage your own health and wellbeing.
It is interesting to note that the archaic meaning of doctor is to teach!

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

The first consultation is scheduled for one hour (and a bit more sometimes), due to the need to uncover the underlying causes of your problem. The following different diagnostic methods are used as needed:

Iridology

This method of diagnostics was initially developed in the 1800s by a European doctor and has been used for centuries by doctors, homeopaths, and naturopaths. By viewing the iris (coloured part) and the sclera (white part) of the eye with a magnifying iris scope, the practitioner is able to understand the heredity traits and disease predispositions of the patient.
Each section of the iris has a reflex area that shows how a particular organ or system is functioning, e.g. the liver, the digestive system, hormonal areas, blood sugar regulation, lymphatic and circulatory system. Iridology can even reveal your inborn personality traits and emotional patterns! Many of my patients are surprised when I read how their body and emotions have been programmed to react to life’s challenges. Understanding oneself is empowering. It enables us to prepare and modify these reactions if necessary, giving some sense of ‘control’ over our lives.

Live Blood Analysis

A drop of your blood on a slide under the microscope enables you to view the fascinating world of your own blood. You can view your red blood cells, white blood cells and even the remnants of your last meal! It is a particularly useful tool catching vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies before they manifest into anaemia. It is also excellent for checking levels of dangerous oxidation and inflammation. Oxidation and inflammation are the two aging evils! Gut parasites and other toxicities can also be identified.

Blood testing

I generally request some specific blood tests. These can be ordered via your GP, or I can order through Healthscope Pathology.
Applied Kinesiology:
This is a form of muscle testing used to identify the appropriate herb, supplement or homeopathic remedy that your body needs. I have been trained in the Three in One Concepts method of tracking through the Behavioural Barometer. This technique is useful for picking up underlying emotional issues. While this method of testing is not for everyone, I do find it extremely beneficial for specific cases.

Food Allergy Tests

These are done by a single blood test, not a skin prick test. They range in price and number from testing for 5 main foods to the complete 93 food panel. Food allergies are so common nowadays and are an underlying cause of many skin problems, reflux, bloating, constipation, IBS, some asthmas. Many people are surprised to hear that food allergies can cause respiratory symptoms such as asthma, sinusitis, persistent coughs, and ear infections. They are more surprised again to learn that food allergies can be a major cause of mood and personality disorders!

Salivary Hormone Testing

“I think it’s my hormones!” is a common complaint from many of my patients. These are functional pathology tests to diagnose causes of problems with hormones, thyroid, and insomnia. The reproductive hormones, mainly oestrogen and progesterone, are more accurately tested this way. Blood tests only measure the amount of hormone in the blood, but not how much of the hormone has actually reached the cells. Salivary hormone testing is far more accurate. The saliva specimens are collected during the day at home, and then posted to the path laboratory.

Functional Liver Detoxification Profile

This is a useful test for analysing liver function. It reveals more than the standard blood test for liver function. The test is based on a urine sample which is collected at home and then sent to the laboratories.

Tests for bowel function, digestive function, leaky gut, and gut parasites

These are essential tests for diagnosing and treating chronic gut problems. Gut parasites are very common due to the average diet being devoid of the essential nutrients to keep them at bay. Most gut symptoms can be diagnosed accurately with a CDSA test (Complete Digestive Stool analysis). This test is also collected at home and sent in to the laboratory. Treatment aims at getting to the cause of the problem, rather than supplying band aid solutions.

Hair analysis

We live in a toxic world. Exposure to fertilizers, pesticides, food additives, medications, paints, and some cooking utensils may leave the body poisoned with toxic metals that cause long term chronic health problems. Hair analysis is a simple test that measures the presence of toxic metals such cadmium, mercury, aluminium, etc that may be the underlying cause of chronic illness.

Blood type testing for blood type diet

The most common blood type is the O Blood group. Nicknamed “the lean mean fight machine” if you have the O blood typing you are advised to base your diet on meat and veg, and to reduce the amount of floured products such as breads, cereals, pasta. If you are an A Blood type, your diet is best dominated by vegetables and fruits, and you need to reduce the amount of meat, except for fish and chicken. B blood group and AB groups also have specific needs and “avoids”. As diet is the underlying cause of many disorders, it is useful to know your blood type and to follow the general guidelines of the blood type diet, as recommended by Dr Peter D’Adamo. You can determine your blood group by a simple finger prick test in the clinic.

TREATMENT METHODS

Naturopathic Consultation

As a lecturer in anatomy, physiology and nutrition, I love to be able to answer all your questions about how your body works and heals.

Weight reduction diets

I do not believe in stress! Stress causes your body to produce excess of the cortisol hormone. This hormone actually puts on weight! Therefore I like to analyse your particular dietary likes and dislikes and model a diet that suits you naturally. Food is meant to be enjoyed! Diet resistant obesity is a real challenge to treat, and I believe it can be handled by a good detox program, proper diet, and treatment of underlying imbalances in the body such s hormonal, thyroid insufficiency, auto-immune disorders, and food allergies.

Detoxification Programs

Liver and gut detoxification is always beneficial. However it can be quite exhausting! Therefore it is often necessary to be done slowly, starting as a light detox, as many of us would not cope with a rapid strong detox program. Homeopathics are my favourite choice of detox aids, along with diet and herbal medicine.

Herbal Medicine

I have completed 3 years of herbal medicine study, and now use a range of Western Herbal Medicine and Ayurvedic herbs, in combination, according to your specific needs. Sometimes I find it necessary to select alcohol free herbs for those who are sensitive to alcohol. Where possible I choose organic herbs.

Homeopathy

Like iridology, this form of healing dates back to the 1800s. It was used by doctors then, and is still used extensively in Europe. It is the one form of medicine that can be given without affecting other pharmaceutical medications. Homeopathy heals the three layers of our being, the body, the mind and the emotions.

Bio-puncture

Homotoxicology is a unique form of homeopathic treatment developed in Europe. Relatively new in Australia, it is fast becoming very popular. Small needles are inserted over trigger points on the body to help bring healing for pain or disease.

Energy Healing

I use a blend of reiki, kinesiology, Journey Meditation, and Chakra balancing.

Yoga

I am a registered yoga teacher with the YTAA, and practice and teach my own blend of Ashtanga, Hatha and Iyenga styles. My passion for yoga developed after a back injury, and then I discovered its stress reducing effects. After a bus day at the clinic, I find that an hour’s yoga simply washes away any stress that has built up over the course of the day. It is of great for back and neck tension. See my web page on www.chakrayoga.com.au for class details.
