Yarra Osteopathy

Welcome to Yarra Osteopathy

Yarra Osteopathy is a thriving osteopathic practice located in the leafy inner-suburb of South Yarra close to South Yarra train station. Osteopathy is a safe and gentle form of treatment for musculoskeletal problems such as back pain and headaches. It is safe for all ages, children, the elderly and pregnant women. At Yarra Osteopathy we treat the whole person, not just the problem. We look for solutions and preventative strategies to your problem. After hours and Saturday appointments are available.

What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a form of hands-on therapy that is now widely recognised as one of the most safe and effective manipulative therapies available. The osteopathic approach helps the body to return to optimal mobility and function by addressing the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms you perceive.

Osteopaths use gentle manipulation techniques such as joint mobilisation, massage, resistance stretching and functional treatment to assist patients to achieve normal pain-free movement and function by correcting underlying dysfunction. Osteopathy is suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Cranial Osteopathy is also offered at Yarra Osteopathy. This is a specialist field, which extends the principles of osteopathic medicine. It involves the gentle release of the skull bones as well as the spine, extremities and myofascia. It is a very relaxing and gentle form of treatment and is especially suitable for babies. This can form the whole or part of the treatment.

Osteopathic care offers holistic approaches to many conditions including:
  • Lower back pains, neck pain, other joint complaints
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Arthritic conditions
  • Sporting injuries such as tendonitis and strains, and stress-related muscle pain
  • Pregnancy-care for a great pregnancy and labour preparation
  • Digestive complaints such as reflux, constipation, IBS
  • Asthma and other breathing difficulties
  • And many more

Osteopaths in Australia complete a five-year, full-time university degree. Osteopaths are primary care practitioners, and are trained to be able to recognise conditions which require medical referral. They are also trained to carry out standard medical examinations of the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system.

BABIES & CHILDREN
During the birth process the head is forced downwards into the bottom of the pelvis while being twisted at the same time. It is then squeezed through the birth canal followed by the rest of the body which is being twisted like a corkscrew. Breech deliveries and intervention with forceps are even more traumatic and can give rise to problems which, left untreated, can last throughout life.

Babies often visit Yarra Osteopathy for a range of problems including…
  • Digestive complaints such as reflux or constipation
  • Feeding and attachment problems
  • Musculoskeletal problems following childbirth such as abnormal head moulding and neck deformity
  • Sleep issues, and much more…

    OSTEOPATHY & PREGNANCY
Treatment by an osteopath can help maximise your body’s ability to adjust to the changes during and after pregnancy. Treatment by an osteopath is gentle, drug free and non-invasive.
Osteopaths release the mechanical problems caused by pregnancy, improve circulation and aim to balance the pelvis to aid in an easier delivery.

Why do pregnant women visit an osteopath?
  • General Osteopathic treatment to cope with your pregnancy. Back and neck pain as a result of extra strain on the spine
  • Nausea and heartburn as a result of tension in the diaphragm
  • Circulatory problems e.g. swelling of the legs and varicose veins as a result of increased pressure on the abdomen
  • History of back problems which could affect pregnancy or delivery

    CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY
Cranial osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body, including the head. It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from new-borns to elderly. It is particularly effective in relieving the compressive forces in babies brought about by pregnancy and labour.

When receiving a cranial treatment, the osteopath uses extremely gentle, but specifically applied adjustments to the movements of the body tissues. It is a very safe method of diagnosis and treatment for the whole body.
