SERVICES
Welcome to Yoga Moves
Yoga is for anyone interested in the general upliftment of the human individual. The cultivation of Yoga develops vitalty and strength. It detoxifies the blood and internal organs, improves the immune system, helps eliminate stress, enhances mental alertness and clarity, and reverses the degenerative process allowing us to live a longer life.
'Ha' represents sun or "male" energy and 'tha' represents the moon or "female" energy. The conjunction is Yoga. Hatha Yoga then is the name given to the technical practices and disciplines by which the body and the vital energies can be brought under control.
At Yoga Moves, we achieve this through the practice of both the Shadow and Iyengar styles.
Located in the heart of Balaclava/East St.Kilda 50 metres from Balaclava train station, YOGA MOVES is open 7 days offering courses, casual classes, immersions, and workshops. We also have specialty prenatal classes. Classes range from beginners to advanced levels. A teacher training program is available. Private sessions by appointment, yoga in schools/workplace, and a wide range of props are also for sale.
Shadow Style
The application of Shadow Yoga is the perfect introduction to the study of yoga. Practice of the forms of Shadow Yoga are designed to release obstructions, tensions, and habits in the individual while cultivating strength and mindfulness.
Shadow Yoga is Hatha Yoga where the restrictions in the physical body are seen as layers of frozen shadows. Through the practice of a series of sequences, as developed by Zhander Remete, the body is freed of these restrictions which in turn releases the mind from its conditioning. Progress through these forms brings about changes in flexibility and firmness, cultivates smooth breathing as well as awareness of the rhythmic flow of the inner motions of the life force. This prepares the student for the eventual application of “freestyle” where their Hatha Yoga practice is guided by intuitive responses.
The fixed forms of Shadow Yoga utilize the guiding principles of marmasthana (the Indian system of the 108 vital junctions of the body) to achieve the appropriate combination of positions and rhythmical movements to obtain an unobstructed flow of the breath.
"By controlling the downward action of inspiration (apana) and the upward action of expiration (prana) the practitioner simultaneously quiets and balances the three humours, purifies the channels of the subtle body, controls the movement of vital energy throughout the physical and subtle bodies, and develops control of his mind in single - point concentration" Zarilli, P. (1998) pp132-133.
Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar Yoga developed by BKS Iyengar is marked by dynamism and precision.Asanas (poses) are individualised to each person's body type and special physical needs. The self is explored through discovery and release of physical tension and psychological resistances. As practice continues one's ability to relax and to concentrate improves, creating mental alertness and inner harmony.
