Yoga Om

Welcome to Yoga Om

" Practice and all is coming" - Guruji

At Yoga Om we teach Ashtanga Yoga in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabi Jois. Ashtanga Yoga involves a flowing series of postures, which help align the body freeing energy blockages, muscle tension and stress. The breath and postures are linked together in a sequence of movements, creating a meditative flow that purifies and detoxifies the system.

Ashtanga classes offer a continuous stream of postures focusing on coordination of movement with the breath and the internal forms of the practice. Classes move at a steady pace with postures strung together like jewels on a thread so that students go deeply into the core of the body producing rapid and lasting transformation. Ashtanga classes are appropriate for students with a basic understanding of the Ashtanga vinyasa system and those wishing to intensify the practice and their understanding of the internal and external forms of the practice. Headstand, shoulder stand and full back bend may be included in these classes.

Ashtanga Guided classes are appropriate for all students, except the absolute beginner who should begin with a Beginners class or a Beginners Course. Preparation for headstand, shoulder stand and full backbend may be included in these Ashtanga Guided classes.

Mysore classes are an opportunity for students to work individually, with guidance and adjustments from the teacher, on the Astanga series of postures. Students learn to develop a deep and flowing practice that integrates the body and mind while facilitating a meditative state of equanimity. Students work independently, so a basic understanding of the Astanga system (coordination of breath with movement) and a basic understanding of self practice are required. In Mysore classes, postures are given, one by one, but in a certain sequential order. Since each posture is designed to prepare you for the rest of the series, beginners tend to have a much shorter practice than more experienced students. As you gain strength, stamina, flexibility and concentration, additional postures are given to the student. Also, compared to other yoga classes, the silence is striking. Occasionally the teacher will whisper something to a student, but the dominant sound is the collective breath. You'll notice the teacher move swiftly from student to student, giving adjustments as appropriate. If you are new to Astanga or accustomed to led classes, the Mysore-style setting can seem strange at first. But with commitment and a little patience, you will be amazed at how quickly you can learn to embrace yoga as a self-practice!

Beginners 2 Classes offer insight into principles of alignment using breath and internal awareness as a root. Focus is on specific phases of movement and form that teach students to work within their own unique patterns to bring balanced awareness and depth to the postures. Classes may include exploration of specific anatomical alignment and form of poses using props and modified sequencing.

Courses Complete beginners to yoga or to the Ashtanga Vinyasa system are encouraged to take our 6-week beginners course or 4-week Mysore course; regularly offered at the studio. Please call 9349 9472 for more information and bookings.

Yin Yoga- It is important to our physical as well as our mental well being to be strong, but it is not the muscular strength which gives us the feeling of ease and lightness in our body, it is the flexibility of the joints and of the connective tissue. Bad knees, bad ankles, bad backs... we all experience problems in these areas at some stage in our life - Yin Yoga postures gently stretch and rehabilitate the connective tissues that form our joints and are held longer with the muscles relaxed. Both Yin and Yang Forms (Astanga) of Yoga are necessary and compliment each other. A very good class for people just recovering from injuries and also for pregnant women.
