Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity, such as athletes, and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is also not uncommon for receivers of Deep Tissue Massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two. Deep tissue work varies greatly. What one calls deep tissue another will call light. When receiving deep tissue work it is important to communicate what you are feeling.

Sports Massage

Sports massage was designed for athletes, but is useful for anyone with chronic pain, injury or range-of-motion issues.

Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.

But you don't have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. Steve generally concentrates on a specific problem area. (Sore neck and shoulders, anyone?)

Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.

There are four types of sports massages:
  • Pre-event sports massage -- a short, stimulating massage 15 - 45 minutes before the event. It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.

  • Post-event sports massage -- given within an hour or two of the event, to normalize the body's tissues.

  • Restorative sports massage -- given during training to allow the athlete to train harder and with less injury.

  • Rehabilitative sports massage -- aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to health.

When Should I Get A Sports Massage?

A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem -- a tender knee from running, for instance.

The therapist generally focuses in on the problem area -- a frozen shoulder or pulled hamstring, for instance -- rather than giving you a thorough full-body massage.

Remedial Massage

When muscles become knotted and tense or damaged, remedial massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow. Remedial massage holistically treats the body. The massage therapist endeavours to identify the original biomechanical dysfunction, thus healing the cause of the disorder, as well as the symptoms. Remedial massage uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints. Massage therapy supports and speeds up the body's own repair mechanisms. A lubricating medium (usually oil) is applied directly on the skin. This ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder are deeply penetrated. Passive joint stretching moves are also used.

Key benefits of Remedial Massage

Key benefits of remedial massage include the stimulation to the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed; the calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; and the toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility. An improvement to the health of the cells, the repairing of tissues, and the easing of stiffness and tension can also be experienced through therapeutic relaxation. Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions often addressed with remedial massage include muscle tightness and pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, whiplash, neck and back pain, headaches and sports injuries.

Structural Alignment for treatment and pain relief.

Structural Alignment is a system by which the body is ‘remodeled’ to enhance the major segments along a vertical line. Through soft tissue, myofascial and resistive stretching techniques, combined with education, this process begins.
  1. Structural Assessment

I assess clients’ structure by looking for postural abnormalities, relationships of important anatomical “landmarks,” and by palpating for tissue texture, tone and temperature.

  2. Myofascial Mobilization

A gentle but highly-effective stretching of fascia (a 3-d web of connective tissue found throughout the body- often referred to as the organ of form).

Two main approaches to facial release are: direct and indirect techniques.

  3. Muscle Energy Technique

Developed over 40 years ago, MET’s are resisted stretches that employ no greater than 20% effort. Stretches are taken further until a greater range of motion is attained.

Because of the ease of contraction, MET’s are safe and appropriate for the most sensitive of clients.
