Exercise or Excusercise

Three sure- fire excuse busters:

Are you finding it harder to get out of bed as winter sets in? Colder days make it harder to step outside and get moving and winter wardrobes can hide the effects of hearty warm meals. But it doesn't have to be like that.

1. Favourite Excuse No. 1 - It's too cold: - In winter we are tempted to look for all kinds of reasons to "Squib out" one of the most common reasons for giving up exercise is blaming the weather this takes the responsibility off your shoulders. After all, it's not your fault that it's cold, windy and rainy outside. But that defence doesn't wash. Solution: you just need to rug up more, beanie, gloves, put on your coat and pick up the pace. Don't get out of the habit of early morning exercise, sure you can put it off to this arvo, but then what happens - oh look you found another excuse! Where did the time go? So set yourself up for success with diamond hard behavioural conviction, just do it!

2. Favourite Excuse No. 2 - It's boring: I say Winter exercise doesn't need to be boring. Sure, summer skies are a great motivator to head outdoors but there are some fantastic ways to heat the body in the cold months; I do not recommend walking outdoors in a thunderstorm or lightening. Solution: it can be as simple as moving outdoors activities inside. There's swimming centres, health clubs and recreation centres with activities such as indoor rock climbing, squash or treadmills in gyms and if things do get boring mix it up, swim one day, gym the next. While walking on the treadmill bring your iPod along or a read a trashy magazine, you can just lose track of time listening to all the hot gossip.

3. Favourite Excuse No. 3 - I don't have enough time: - This excuse sometimes challenges for No. 1 spot, I often have people say, 'you don't understand I don't have enough time.' When really they should say I don't have Time Management! If bad weather is a common excuse then lack of time would have to give it a run for its money. Busy lifestyles balancing heavy work schedules, family and social commitments place enough pressure without trying to fit a daily workout into the mix, right? WRONG. Solution: I highly recommend you exercise first thing in the morning, this way it's over and done with, it sets you up for a great day, clears your head, kicks starts your metabolism and you have achieved something before work takes over. If you're a stay-at home mum, walk the kids to and from school, or head out for your walk once you have dropped them off. If you have toddlers at home, buy a jogger pram, pushing the jogger will give the upper body a workout while you walk or run.

This is great family bonding activity as well as good for the heart. With all this advice no one has a reason to be lazy this winter. You need to build a routine so it becomes a habit, just remember how good it feels when you're fit and healthy and finding time for yourself won't be that hard.
