Why do people start smoking cigarettes? And why is it difficult for many people to stop?

These are really great, empowering and compelling questions to ask. The quality of the questions you ask yourself really determines the quality of your life. Many of my clients come to see me to in their words “fix me” or “help me stop smoking” as many individuals are smoking and they are so frustrated with themselves; and at times feel like they are beating themselves up when they tell me, and I can see through their facial expressions that they have tried so hard to stop smoking - in fact trying so many different methods to quit with limited success, and at times I feel like I am their last hope or their last life line.

Although there is a problem with the word “try” it is like the twin sister of “hope” and “we’ll see” - let’s hope its going to work. Such words imply failure when you really want to necessitate change into your world. They encourage procrastination and should be removed from the English language. Unless you really want something to work it will work. as Henry Ford says “whether you think you can or you can’t either way you are right.”

I will tell you why - its all emotional and its all based on our “memory packets” in our unconscious or subconscious minds. Truth be known that many people light up their first cigarette in order to avoid bad feelings during what is known in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) as the socialisation period between the ages of 14-21. All of my clients (except for one client who I treated last week) smoked their first cigarette between the ages of 14-21 to avoid those so called “bad feelings” so to not be teased, picked on and be part of the cool group at school, and to not be left out in social situations. So yes lighting up that first cigarette for nine out of every ten individuals who smoke cigarettes today is emotional, and many people who continue to smoke cigarettes today is because of emotions again; namely fear and anxiety.

And of course in relation to the above the unconscious mind is still stuck back at the time these individuals first started smoking cigarettes today, because as in NLP we know that the prime directive of the unconscious mind is to “protect” you - and this deep level of consciousness thinks it is protecting such people by keeping them as smokers. Clearly this could not be further from the truth, and this is why many people give up in frustration from trying many different remedies out there in the marketplace and yet are still smoking cigarettes, even thought they no longer wish to. The unconscious mind has not read the health reports with the most common threads that purport that smoking cigarettes causes smokers to get cancer, heater disease, strokes, diabetes and liver damage to name. The unconscious mind preserves habits, and this is where the Quit Cigarettes in 60 Minutes system is quite revolutionary because a combination of NLP and advanced hypnosis is used by myself to re-wire and re-program a person’s unconscious mind (of course with their permission because people cannot be forced to do things they don’t want to do) and breaking this most powerful habit; essentially giving such individuals an identity shift from being a smoker to now being a happy, over the moon non-smoker. However like anything you have to want this change, and as Susan Jeffer’s says that you need to face your fears and do it anyway!

And the creator of the universe does not want us to be anxious about anything as promised: “Do not be anxious about anything.” (Philippians 4:23) Remember if a 70 year old man, and a 23 year old can successfully quit cigarettes in one hour through this system, then so can you. The only limits are your own mind and belief systems. So what are YOU waiting for?
