The goal of exercise physiology is to prevent and manage injuries and chronic diseases, through lifestyle, exercise and behaviour modification.
The term “Exercise Physiologist” (EP) describes an exercise specialist who is able to design and deliver exercise programs, to fulfill a client's needs. Such programs may involve things such as Pilates, gym programs and home-based exercises. The aim is to improve the client’s range of motion, strength, and functional capacity.
They specialise in exercise for rehabilitation, exercise for health and well being, chronic and complex medical conditions, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, work conditioning and improvements in sports performance. EPs are trained in preventing the onset of disease through exercise and lifestyle modification, in the treatment of disease, understanding interactions of exercise and pharmacology, managing multiple medical conditions, attending to the risk factor, health education and in providing post-acute exercise rehabilitation – all with a view to produce effective and cost effective solutions.
EPs operate uniquely in the healthcare market in that they deliver exercise programs that also incorporate proven strategies that facilitate long-term behaviour change. When selecting your EP, ensure that your chosen EP is accredited with the ESSA (Exercise & Sports Science Australia - formerly known as AAESS). All EPs should have this accreditation.
These include a range of commonly preventable health conditions:
