Cushing’s Disease

Cushing’s disease is a disorder that is caused by the excessive production or administration of a hormone called cortisol. It is sometimes called hypercortisolism. Symptoms include upper body obesity, a rounded face, increased fat around the neck, thin arms and legs, fragile, thin skin, fatigue, weak muscles, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, irritability, anxiety, depression, hirsutism, and purple striations on the abdomen, thighs and breasts. Treatment options depend on the reason for the excess cortisol and may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, cortisol-inhibiting drugs, and lifestyle changes.
