Febrile Convulsions

Febrile convulsions are convulsions in infants or children that have been caused by a sudden increase in temperature. It is not a form of epilepsy and it is important to remember that they are not harmful and do not cause brain damage. Symptoms of febrile convulsions include loss of consciousness, twitching of the arms and legs, breathing difficulties, becoming pale or bluish, and rolling of the eyes. Treatment is often not necessary however medication may be required to help stop the convulsions if they continue for longer than five minutes. The illness causing the fever will also need to be treated as appropriate.
