Post traumatic stress disorder
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD can develop after a very distressing or life-threatening situation. It may occur as an acute disorder soon after trauma or have a delayed onset, with symptoms occurring more than six months later. Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks and distressing dreams; avoiding thoughts, feelings, and activities associated with the trauma; feelings of detachment or estrangement; diminished interest and participation in activities; hopelessness about the future; and physical and psychological hypersensitivity including trouble sleeping, anger, difficulty concentrating, an exaggerated startle response, and physical reaction in situations that remind you of the trauma such as hyperventilation and rapid heartbeat. Treatment options include medication, cognitive behavioural therapy, stress management techniques, cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, and hypnotherapy.
