What's new in Chiro at KwC?

Another Chiro on the Team
The clinic is expanding with a new chiropractor on the team to cater for the increasing demand for our services.
Sarah is an experienced chiropractor who uses non manual techniques to adjust the spine. She is also a kinesiologist with experience in treating children with learning and behavioural problems. Between Sarah and myself your chiropractic needs should be covered!

Behaviour and Learning Problems
At KwC we are part of a growing number of chiropractors who are having wonderful success at helping children who have behaviour and learning problems. Often these kids are labelled as having some degree of neurodevelopmental delay. We find that the children we can help have retained some or all of their neonatal (or primitive) reflexes.

Primitive reflexes develop while a child is still in the womb and remain active for the first 12 months of life. During this time, they are needed for development and survival because the higher centres of the nervous system (parts of the brain) are not fully developed.

At birth, they should be fully active. Gradually, during the first 6 to 12 months, higher centres in the brain take over so that their action is inhibited and they integrate into normal brain function.

Sometimes they are retained and not properly inhibited.

If this happens, they can disturb some or all of the higher centre functions. This will affect many things. The most obvious to other people are: social behaviour, learning, gross motor movements, and fine motor movements.

From research and experience it appears that trauma of some kind somewhere between conception and the early months of life cause reflexes to be retained. The big factor appears to be birth trauma including caesarian section and any form of induced delivery. The birth process creates a great deal of stress on the skull especially around the area covering the brainstem. The nerve centres controlling primitive reflexes are in the brainstem so it is possible that trauma to that area has a direct influence on how the reflexes are finally integrated.

Primitive Reflexes that are integrated in the clinic program are:
 Fear Paralysis Reflex
 The Moro Reflex
 Juvenile suck reflex
 Rooting reflex
 Palmar reflex
 Plantar reflex
 Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR)
 Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR)
 Spinal Galant Reflex

Treatment is based around the concept of the “Pyramid of Learning.” At the base of the pyramid is structure. At the top of the pyramid is academic learning. As in all pyramids, the base has to be well built so that the layers on top are stable. Put simply, for children to be able to learn effectively, to their potential, the bottom of the pyramid has to be functioning well.

Please give us a call if you would like to know more about our program.

I Don't Crack!
Not every chiropractor adjusts by trying to produce a "cavitation" or a "crack". There are a lot of people in the community who would benefit greatly from chiropractic treatment but won't try it because they think all chiropractors do the same thing and they all crack. Well .....they don't! All my techniques are crack free and stress free. Have a look at my website and consider the possibilities.......

(Must go. Have a great day but read on for Claire's updates on massage.)

Massage
Massage is the systematic and scientific manipulation of the body’s muscular and soft tissues in order to improve both the structure and function of your body, thereby improving your overall health. Massage techniques are applied to the skin, fascia, muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body. These techniques vary depending on your needs.

Why Bother with a Massage?
Most people would agree that a massage makes them feel good but many probably don’t realise exactly how good a regular massage is for their health.

Muscle restriction, tightness, stiffness and spasm all limit full movement and can lead to injury. Regular massage will relieve these problems. Many people wait until they are already in pain or suffering from injuries before turning to massage, but why let it get that bad? Come in now for a massage and help your muscles do what they are meant to do.

What are the Benefits?
The general benefits of massage are:
 Reduced muscle tension
 Improved blood flow
 Increased flow of oxygen and nutrients to tissues
 Increased joint mobility and flexibility
 Reduced anxiety and depression

Cupping
Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese method that has been practiced for thousands of years for the treatment of pain. It involves the application of suction to the treatment area through the use of glass cups. It is used alone or as an addition to massage therapy.

Cupping feels similar to a medium-light or deep massage depending on the amount of suction applied. The result is a greatly increased supply of blood to muscles and skin which provides nourishment to the local area and releases tension particularly in areas of muscle rigidity.

What are the Benefits?
The general benefits of cupping are:
 Improved circulation
 Increased blood flow to nourish inactive muscles
 Reduction of pain and swelling
 Loosening of adhesions and scar tissue
 Improved lymph drainage
 Speeds the natural healing process in the specific areas of application

Reflexology
Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on a system of zones and reflex areas that reflect an image of the body on the feet with the idea that such work effects a physical change to the body.

What are the Benefits?
The general benefits of reflexology are:
 Reduced stress and tension
 Increased energy
 Improved circulation
 Stimulated nerve function
