What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an emotionally receptive state of mind in which a subject focuses on the suggestions made by the therapist. The client usually feels relaxed, and almost in a comfortably dream like state. Clients say that they enjoy the experience, and most are keen to repeat the experience.
What can Hypnosis do for me?
Hypnosis can help you do almost anything you want it to. For example it is useful for
Managing anxiety
Stress management
Overcoming fear of public speaking, meeting new people and situations
Increasing self esteem
Helping you focus on the tasks you set yourself
Increasing confidence
Letting go of fears and anxieties relating to past trauma
Procrastination
Exam anxiety
Anger Management
Letting go of bad habits
The down side is that hypnosis cannot make you do anything unless you want it to. A client who thinks, for example, that they really should loose weight, but does not want to give up their favorite fattening foods will not find that hypnosis is much help. A client who has definitely decided to loose weight will usually find that hypnosis makes it easier to enjoy less fattening foods, be satisfied with slightly smaller portions, and enjoy exercising. Weight loss tends to follow naturally.
Can I be hypnotised?
In my experience, anyone who wants to be hypnotised can enter a trance. Some people are better at entering the hypnotic state than others, but with a little practice, anyone can relax into a pleasantly hypnotic state.
Can I be made to do anything under hypnosis which I would not otherwise do?
Not really. In my experience, if the therapist suggests anything the client does not want to hear, the client is quite likely to emerge spontaneously from the trance. On the other hand, I have sometimes suggested to clients that they might like to return to full consciousness, and had my clients decide that the hypnotised state is too nice to leave just yet!
How safe is it?
Very safe. I am a registered psychologist, and have had around ten years experience as a qualified hypnotherapist. I am trained to provide a gentle and evidence based system of psychological support, and can offer other therapy if it is advisable.. If issues arise which need counselling as well as hypnotherapy, I am qualified to fall back on psychological interventions which are evidence based and well researched.
How much does it cost?
Sessions last an hour or so, and cost a hundred dollars a session. If you have private medical insurance, you may get a refund, depending on the schedule you have chosen. In some cases, Medibank will pay for most of the expense. However, you will need a referral from your doctor for this. Contact me for more information on this.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends. I usually like to see clients at least twice. Some clients need more support if they are to achieve their goals.
