The Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a proven, simple and powerful approach towards self care and the study of movement. People of all ages and abilities can learn to eliminate unnecessary tension, relieve pain and prevent injury whilst learning to move in an easier, more effective way.
As we grow up, we naturally learn how to move and coordinate ourselves but we can also pick up bad habits along the way. If these habits continue through everyday activity, they can cause pain, strain and fatigue. Over time, we often just accept these habits as normal and we don't even realise that we have lost our flexibility because tension has become an unconscious response to stress over a lifetime.
The Alexander Technique is an intelligent, practical way to help you to break down these habits that we have built up over the years and by re-establishing our mind-body unity the work helps us improve the ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination.
The Alexander Technique is named after Frederick Matthias Alexander, an actor born in Australia in 1869. Alexander developed the technique whilst looking at speech and breathing problems he was experiencing while performing. An absolute determination to find the real root of his problems led him to discover certain fundamental truths about human reactivity, co-ordination and movement.
Over a period of many years he developed a technique which not only eliminated his vocal problems but also brought about remarkable improvements in his general health. He was encouraged to teach his method to others.
The Alexander Technique is not just a therapy, but an education for the mind and body to learn to move in a new effortless way..
