What is Pilates?
Pilates is a program of musculoskeletal conditioning developed by a German doctor, Dr Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. It specifically addresses “core stability” or “core strength” to aid in improving the biomechanics of body movement, which helps to improve on one’s posture and ability to perform day-to-day strenuous tasks.
What is MD Health Pilates?
MD Health Pilates is when MD Health’s Physiotherapists utilize the concepts of Pilates in clinical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. At MD Health, we work alongside the concepts of Pilates to implement a personalized Pilates program for our clients based on the findings from the full body assessment. We combine our hats as Physiotherapists and Pilates practitioners to ensure that we are thinking both from a clinical and strengthening point of view. We believe that will give the best outcome for our clients in terms of helping them address their day-to-day strength & fitness requirements whilst simultaneously decreasing and managing the risk of developing musculoskeletal conditions.
What then is MD Health Pilates – Complete Transformation Program
MD Health Pilates – Complete Transformation Program is a seamless integration of Physiotherapy, Pilates and Dietetics. At MD Health, we found that by having control of our members’ Input (Dietary) and Output (Pilates), we are able to provide them with a holistic and comprehensive approach to a body that is both aesthetically beautiful and functional. All our Pilates members will be dealing with both our professional experts in creating a better you – MD Health’s Physiotherapists and MD Health’s qualified Dietitians. All our members will also have access to our Dietetics Online website (http://www.dieteticsonline.com.au) - an interactive website allowing you to access your personalised 7-day menu plan, Activity Calculator, Food and Goals Diary, weekly Recipes, fact sheets, articles, and advise on how to move it and lose it – just to name a few (phew!). So – if you want the complete overhaul – the Complete Transformation Program is just for you!
How is “core strength” different to general strength?
Core strength is a concept relating to one’s ability to control and stabilize the “core” of the body – having a stable and controlled core enables better peripheral movement biomechanics which improves movement performance and decreases risk of injury through faulty biomechanics. People often think of the spine/ trunk when they think of “core stability”, but more than that, it is also stability around the shoulders and the pelvis. Together, having a stable spine, shoulders and pelvis will allow the upper and lower limbs to work more efficiently. The arms work against a stable shoulder, the legs work against a stable pelvis and together, they all work against a stable spine.
How is MD Health Pilates different?
Firstly, all our programs are designed and implemented by qualified Physiotherapists and Dietitians. At MD Health, any potential member must complete a Full Body Assessment with one of our Physios. This is complimentary & obligation free. The assessment allows the Physiotherapist to collect musculoskeletal data about the client, identify possible areas of weakness and potential injury and develop a tailored Pilates program. At regular intervals throughout the program, the client is re-assessed to track their progress and alterations made to the program accordingly. In addition, once you have signed up, there’s even more! For the first 3 weeks, not only will you be doing your 2 sessions of Pilates per week, you will be meeting our In-house Dietitians for a complete Full Dietetics Assessment and Body fat measurements. You will also receive your log-on details to access your own personalised Dietetics Online program – allowing you access 24-7 anytime, anywhere around the world!
We work alongside Pilates principles in core stability training but as appropriate, also utilise our skills as Physios to address musculoskeletal conditions as they appear. We work with specialised equipment like the Pilates reformer & the Ultrasound.
Some of the key benefits of Clinical Pilates that we at MD Health have identified are:
• Change in body shape
• Improved posture
• Increase in strength
• Improved overall muscle tone
• Increased metabolism
• Assist in weight management
• Improvement on low back pain
• Improvement on other musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain and other conditions
• Ideal for pre-surgery and post surgery
• Improvement on Pelvic floor and women’s health issues
• Ideal for Pregnancy
• Improve performance for athletes such as swimmers, tennis players, football, netball, basketball, golf, etc
• Injury prevention or if injured, faster recovery from injury
How is Pilates relevant to weight management?
Pilates is a resistance-based exercise program. Over the length of your program, you will develop more muscle tone and shape. Don’t think that you will turn bulky – this is not likely to happen as it requires a great deal of male hormones and illegal substances for this to occur.
About half-way through your program, one of the key things you will notice is your change in posture. You stand, walk, and sit up straighter. This alone will attract a lot of compliments from your family and friends. It will change the way your body is projected and often, people will think that you have lost weight.
And how does Pilates manage your weight? Pilates will increase muscle tone, which will inadvertently increase your metabolic rate. Muscles by nature require sustenance to sustain its shape, such as the food you eat and when insufficient, it will take it from stored fat in your body. This is how your body starts to change shape. Don’t forget, other benefits you will acquire which are just as important are better management of your aches, pains and injuries.
