HYPNOTHERAPY

The techniques and principles of hypnosis have been used to benefit mankind for many years. When hypnosis is stripped of the misunderstandings and erroneous ideas which surround it, it can be seen for what it really is - a normal, natural healthy state of mind and one which virtually anyone can achieve with the correct guidance.

Hypnotherapy can be applied with success to a wide variety of problems either as the primary therapy or as a valuable adjunct to a any other form of treatment.

How can Hypnosis Help?

Hypnotherapy has been a great help in overcoming many problems including smoking, overeating, nail-biting, bedwetting, insomnia, phobias, tension headaches and migraines, self confidence, study and examination nerves, stress and tension as well as anxiety induced conditions.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation which is natural and safe. It is a state of mind between waking and sleeping where we are conscious, aware of physical sensations and surroundings yet much more receptive to therapeutic suggestions than we normally would be. It is a day-dream state in which we relax, drift away and make use of the resources of our unconscious minds. In a trance or dream-like state we can view our problems from a distance, remove tension and present optimistic alternatives to ourselves. By using this method it is possible to get off the merry-go-round which occurs when we try with our conscious mind to solve unconscious puzzles. Therapy success depends on the teamwork between the patient and the therapist.

What does it feel like?

Sensations of hypnosis vary from patient to patient. It is usual to experience mild drowsiness together with pleasant feelings of comfort and well being. They are in fact, totally relaxed.
People in hypnosis are conscious and able to hear the hypnotherapist's voice, remaining at all times in control of themselves. They will not do or say anything that they would not elect to do of their own choice.

How Safe is Hypnosis?

It is a natural and beneficial experience that is free from drugs. People can wake themselves up at any time they wish. The hypnotic state is maintained by mutual co-operation between the patient and the hypnotherapist.

Can Anyone be Hypnotised?

Virtually anyone can be hypnotized - some more easily than others. Improvement comes with practice and someone who starts slowly can often become a better subject than a fast starter. All that is needed is a desire to co-operate with the hypnotherapist; you cannot be hypnotized against your will.

Is a Doctor's Referral needed to see a Hypnotherapist?

A referral is usually not necessary. A medical check is advisable before therapy in any case where a problem may have a predominantly physical cause. Often your hypnotherapist will work with your Doctor because many problems can best be overcome by a joint effort.

HERBAL MEDICINE
Herbal Medicine is the most ancient system of medicine, still used extensively today. It is medicine made exclusively from plants and plant products.

The World health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 80% of the world's population uses Herbal Medicine as their primary form of treatment and therefore supports its use.

The Herbalist's philosophy is that humans, like plants, are biologically complex. This means that to achieve a long lasting medicinal benefit with few or no side effects, a plant with its complex active principles will be utilised by the body more easily than a single isolated drug.

Although Herbal Medicine is the oldest system of medicine, it also has a valid scientific basis for its effectiveness. Herbal Medicine acknowledges and seeks to understand the active chemistry of the plant, however the basic philosophy of Herbal Medicine is that these plant chemicals should be used in their crude, most natural form.

There is an enormous body of modern scientific data on medicinal plants to support the use of Herbal Medicine as an effective medicine, either as an alternative or to complement pharmaceutical drugs.

Many drugs derive their active chemicals from herbs and modern medicine has obtained many of its drugs from the plant world. The active chemical in a plant is isolated and refined to yield a drug, which is then administered. An example of this is Aspirin, which was originally isolated and refined from the white willow (Salix species).

What is a Herbalist?

A Medical Herbalist is a trained health care practitioner who has knowledge in both plant medicines and in human health and disease. They will advise and give information on diet and lifestyle as an inportant part of any treatment regime, and will refer on to other health care providers where necessary.

A major aspect of the philosophy of Herbal Medicine is of the person as a whole, rather than treating only symptoms. The Herbalist seeks to treat the underlying cause of the disease or ill health. Fundamental to Herbal Medicine is the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself, therefore treatment should enhance this quality.

What are the benefits of consulting an accredited Herbalist?

  • To obtain professional, natural and safe health care, diet and lifestyle advice.
  • To maintain good health and prevent disease.
  • To treat disease and improve well being.

Consulting a Herbalist - What to expect

During a consultation, the practitioner will examine and discuss in detail the reason for your visit and your presenting complaint. A herbalist will discuss your diet, lifestyle or other factors which may be affecting your health.

Herbalists are interested in all aspects of health; our aim is to treat each person individually and holistically.

Prescriptions dispensed are usually in liquid form, chosen specially for the individual. The combined action of the different herbs provides a complete medicine for the whole person. From time to time the practitioner may choose to use tablets, capsules or teas.

To take herbal medicine, the prescribed dose (if in liquid form) is usually diluted in a small amount of water or juice before drinking.

Herbal medicine supplied by an NHAA member will be marked with clear instructions on dosage and any other requirements. These instructions should be followed precisely as they offer the maximum benefit to be gained from the medicine.

    How long does treatment take?

Improvement times vary widely from individual to individual, however some change or improvement in symptoms should be noticed within 4-6 weeks for chronic complaints, or within hours to a day for acute complaints such as a cold or the flu.

Chronic problems are particularly well suited to treatment with herbal medicine. The treatment may take several months, however the positive changes which occur, together with very few if any side effects, are well worth the effort.

Is Herbal Medicine safe and are there any side effects?

Herbal Medicine is an extremely safe and effective health treatment. No poisonous plants are used in Western Herbal Medicine. Reactions rarely occur when Herbal Medicine is professionally prescribed. In the event that there is a reaction, you should consult your prescribing practitioner straight away. NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP)

The initial ideas of NLP were developed around 1973 by Richard Bandler, a student, and John Grinder, a professor of linguistics, in association with the social scientist Gregory Bateson. The term "Neuro-linguistic programming" denotes a set of models and principles meant to explore how mind and neurology (neuro), language patterns (linguistic), and the organization of human perception and cognition into systemic patterns (programming) interact to create subjective reality and human behaviors.

Due in part to its open-ended philosophy, NLP is controversial. It is at times criticized in the scientific community as unproven or pseudoscientific, and amongst those who watch for fraud, for exaggerated claims and unethical approaches by a number of practitioners. There is also some dispute among its developers and proponents regarding what NLP is and is not.

    Goals of NLP

A person seeking change is in effect seeking a path through an unfamiliar landscape, to a goal which at present they conceptualize they desire, but in some way lack a means to reach. In this sense, the place of the coach or "other" is to heuristically learn about and guide their exploration in a fruitful manner, by helping them with regard to alternative paths, the desirability of present goals, or their perceptions as to the landscape.

In this analogy, the purpose and function of NLP is a step beyond this: - to provide a general philosophy and approach (together with tools and methodologies) that will assist a competent guide to generatively and more optimally fulfill this role in any completely different personal landscape, that is robust despite the immense variability of people, psychologies and circumstances.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) studies the structure of how humans think and experience the world.

NLP model and “presuppositions” NLP is a model; it isn’t a theory, nor is it concerned with ultimate truth about human behavior. There are the presuppositions upon which that model is built. To test a presupposition, act as if it were true and notice the results you get.

Presuppositions are beliefs that someone practicing NLP will find useful for creating changes in themselves and the world, more easily and effectively. The emphasis is on "useful" not whether each one could be proven to be "true". Practitioners of NLP often include different presuppositions in their list but what follows are the most common.

    More about NLP

NLP began as a model of how we communicate to ourselves and others. It was originally developed by Richard Bandler, John Grinder and others. This model explains how we process the information that comes to us from the outside. The belief is that "The map is not the territory." And so the internal representations that we make about an outside event are not necessarily the event itself.

Typically what happens is that there is an external event and we run that event though our internal processing. We make an Internal Rrepresentation (I/R) of that event. That I/R of the event combines with a physiology and creates a state. "State" refers to the internal emotional state of the individual: A happy state, a sad state, a motivated state, and so on. Our I/R includes our internal pictures, sounds and dialogue, and our feelings (for example whether we feel motivated, challenged, pleased, excited, and so on). A given state is the result of the combination of an internal representation and a physiology.

So what happens is that an event comes in through our sensory input channels which are: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory. Whent the external event comes through it is filtered and we process the event. As we process the event, we delete, distort, and generalise the information that comes in, according to any number of several elements that filter our perception. Very often, the interpretation of the event that we get after the deletion, distortion and generalisation is not the reality of the event.
