8 REASONS WHY YOU CAN’T GO PAST ROWVILLE FAMILY OSTEOPATHY

1) Treatment focused on improving your body's dysfunctions and healing the tissue destruction that are causing your pains, rather than just relieving them.

2) Focus on using your body’s own inbuilt compensating and healing abilities, reducing or completely avoiding the need for drugs and surgery.

3) Employ a whole person approach to treatment, not just treating where your pain is.

4) Focus on finding, correcting and preventing the roots of your problems, not just relieving the symptoms, and avoiding the need to continually come in for maintenance treatment.

5) A teamwork approach where we work with you, to put your health back into your own hands instead of being dependant on ours.

6) Using the whole toolbox approach with a large range of hands-on techniques used. This may include massage, cranial Osteopathy and gentle Osteopathic skeletal adjustments.

7) Focus on providing safe and effective treatment for people of all ages and stages of life, from pregnancy and infants to the elderly. (Manipulations not performed on babies, young children and the elderly.)

8) Focus on you as an individual rather than the problems, with treatment customised to your individual case, health problems and preferences.

HOW DOES OSTEOPATHY WORK

Osteopathic manual medicine is a form of treatment based on the concept that the structure of the human body influences its function and that dysfunctions in the body will cause destruction of the tissues, ultimately causing inflammation and pain. So our goal is to improve your body's structural framework, and its function, to promote your own inbuilt compensatory and healing mechanisms. This usually reduces the amount of pain you experience as well as increasing your body’s ability to fight disease (i.e. stimulating the immune system, improving blood flow). We do this by using a large range of hands-on techniques and exercises, customised to each individual, and by considering the whole person instead of just treating where the pain is.

It is a common misconception that Osteopathic theories have not been scientifically validated. Osteopathic treatment is based on Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology, Biomechanics, rehabilitation and exercise sciences. In fact, there exists a great deal of research that not only provides a physiological basis for Osteopathic concepts and techniques, but also provides statistical data on outcomes.

We will also endeavour to keep your treatments to as low a number as we can and, where appropriate, we will advise you on ways you can reduce or sometimes completely eliminate the need for maintenance treatment plus ways to prevent your problems from reoccurring. It is our goal to work with you to put you and your family's health back into your own hands, and not be dependent on ours!

APPOINTMENTS

Consultations by appointment only.

Please arrive 20-30 minutes before the start of your initial consultation to fill out an initial consultation questionnaire. By going through the questionnaire before hand, more time will be spent on treatment and you will get the best possible value of time with Justin.

When visiting for the first time, a full case history will be taken as well as an examination. This generally requires removing some of your clothing and the performance of a simple series of movements. Assessment is based on a highly developed sense of touch, called palpation, to identify any points of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body. Although x-rays are usually not necessary, please bring along any that you already have that relate to your problem. Your osteopathic treatment will be tailored to the requirements of you as an individual, and techniques are selected which are appropriate to your needs.

For some acute pain, one to two treatments may be all that is necessary. Three to four sessions is the average for most clients. Chronic conditions may need six to ten sessions or more.

Hicaps terminal is available for private health insurance claims at the time of your appointment, pay only the gap.

OSTEOPATHIC PRACTITIONERS

All Osteopaths in Australia are regulated by the Health Practitioner Registration Boards in each state. To practice osteopathy, the practitioner must register with their state government’s registration board and have a significant standard of training as set by the board. Currently there are three universities in Australia teaching Osteopathy in the form of a five year double degree of a Bachelor of Clinical Science and a Masters of Osteopathy or equivalent. The education combines the traditional methods of medical and orthopaedic diagnosis as well as osteopathic manual medicine.

Osteopaths use a variety of manual techniques all of which are aimed at relaxing muscles and relieving joint strains in an endeavour to return the body to normal, relaxed, pain free functioning. No two osteopaths work alike so if you have had previous Osteopathic treatment, you could find your treatment quite different to the treatment you have experienced in the past. In choosing which osteopathic techniques to use, we take into account your problems or conditions, your personal preferences and what will give you the best possible results in the safest way.

OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT PROCESS

Your practitioner will begin by take a history, asking questions, and then perform a physical examination, which includes the musculoskeletal system, in order to detect and locate any somatic, or bodily, dysfunctions. Such dysfunctions include, but are not limited to, tissue tenderness, asymmetries, range of motion restrictions, and abnormal changes in muscles, tendons, ligaments, membranes, fluids, fascia, and bones.

Once the practitioner has made a diagnosis, they will explain the problem and the suggested treatment program to you. If at this point you do not wish to proceed with the treatment program, you may withdraw from treatment without prejudice.

Your practitioner’s treatment goal is to reduce or remove the dysfunctions located in the best possible way for your body. A range of osteopathic manual medicine techniques can be used, from a very light touch such as cranial osteopathic techniques to heavier pressures such as stretching, massage and joint manipulation.

Other recommendations may be made to further aid healing, for example, modifications in diet, exercise, or other assistive modalities.

At subsequent consultations, your practitioner find out how you have progressed since your last visit, and will perform another physical examination to reassess for changes in previous dysfunctions, plus for any new dysfunctions, before continuing with your treatment program.

OSTEOPATHIC TECHNIQUES

Osteopaths work with their hands to perform such treatment using a variety of techniques:

Massage and stretching techniques
Articulation Techniques – passive joint mobilisation
Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) – releasing contracted muscles and restricted muscles, using mechanical principles, by working against resistance
Osteopathic Manipulation Technique (OMT) – small quick movement of a joint to create a joint release
Counter-strain (CS) techniques – positioning restricted joints and muscles in a position of comfort in order to achieve a release
Functional techniques – positioning tissues in a position of least tension in order to achieve a release
Osteopathy in the Cranial Field (OCF) or Cranial Osteopathic techniques – involves very gently holding tissues in a tension free and balanced position for a significant amount of time to achieve a release (whole body technique, not just the head)
Balance Ligamentous Tension (BLT) techniques – balancing the tension of ligaments in order to achieve a release of the ligaments and joints
Visceral techniques – management of conditions affecting internal organs involving gentle and rhythmical stretching of the visceral areas

IS OSTEOPATHY SAFE?

There’s no such thing as a form of medical treatment that is guaranteed 100% safe in every case. Even the painkillers you buy in the supermarket for a headache may cause severe side effects in some clients. However, manually applied osteopathy is considered one of the safest, most non-invasive and most non-injurious medical treatments available. Osteopathic practitioners are trained to recognise any condition that might make Osteopathic treatment inadvisable, and will refer clients for appropriate medical attention in such cases. Just as a Doctor regards safety as the most important factor in selecting the appropriate medication for a particular client, an Osteopath will also select the most appropriate style of treatment with safety as the prime consideration.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL?

If you are a Veterans Affairs, WorkCover, TAC Accident or Medicare's Enhanced Primary Care Plan client, you are most welcome at our centre. Please let the reception staff know when making your booking that you are one of these clients.

If you are attending through Veterans Affairs or Medicare, you must have a Doctor’s referral. If you do not have one, please see your own doctor or make an appointment with one of the friendly doctors at our centre who will be happy to provide the referral if appropriate.

If you are attending through WorkCover and TAC Accident, you do NOT need a referral.
