    STRESS AND PAIN
"Walk with your head up, no matter what you just stepped in!"

Your body copes with stress after stress.

Your body will fight infection and disease and deal with emotional and physical problems from the day you are born, this usually leads to you growing in strength of body and mind.

At times, your body will need assistance from a doctor, dentist, counseller or physical therapist, such as a chiropractor.

Many people are becoming more aware of 'self-care' and 'self-healing' and are seeking gentle and natural ways to deal with their emotional and physical ailments. One of the largest drugless health-care professions, beginning more than 100 years ago is chiropractic care.

Your spine houses the spinal cord (nerves). Stresses, emotional tension, sporting or physical accidents can cause changes to occur in your spine and/or limbs, resulting in musculoskeletal dysfunction which can lead to malfunction or body 'dis-harmony'.

You may then experience pain, which your brain will decide to acknowledge for a short time, long time or ignore.

If your brain decides to ignore the pain or you mask the pain with something, such as 'pain-killers', the malfunction in your muscles and/or joints may still remain with the possibility of a secondary problem developing (usually from the body trying to compensate).

    INJURY WARNING SIGNS
"Smile - it makes your teeth feel important!"

Your body is equipped with a warning system, to inform you when injury has occurred. Some of the signs to look for, include:

    • Postural changes and/or changes in the way you walk
    • Muscle tightness and/or weakness
    • Dull aching joint and/or muscle pain
    • Pins and needles or numbness especially in your hands and/or feet
    • Sharp and defined joint and/or muscle pain
    • Pain increased after prolonged sitting and standing
    • Pain increasing toward the end of your working day

SEEK TREATMENT EARLIER RATHER THAN LATER
These above signs are your body's way to say:
"Take care of me and prevent it happening again".

Different types of care will be given to you according to the severity and history of your problem/s. Types of care may include one or more of the following:

Acute care - for a recent and possibly severe injury/condition,
Chronic care - your injury/problem has a longer history.
Rehabilitation care - if you are recovering from an injury and building strength to return to your full potential.
Preventive care - includes advice on prevention of re-injury.
Maintenance care - treatment/care for detection of your weak areas that may develop into a longer and/or more severe problem.

That stiff neck you have, could develop into torticollis (which is a very stiff neck, usually painful with restricted movement and is held in an unusual position). Or that back sprain/strain you are aware of, after more twisting and lifting could develop into a vertebral disc prolapse (a 'blown disc').

So, it is important, to care for yourself, eat well and exercise, follow preventive injury advice and seek treatment sooner rather than later.

    WHAT IS A SUBLUXATION?
A 'vertebral subluxation' is abnormal joint movement between two vertebral segments (spinal bones). This can initiate a chain of events resulting in altered nerve function, muscle spasm, inflammation, oedema and/or pain.

If untreated, degenerative changes can occur resulting in altered spinal curves, narrowing or degeneration of your vertebral discs (sponges between each spinal bone), muscle hypertonicity (very tight muscles), calcification or fusion of vertebral segments and pain.

"Always keep an ear out for good advice... and juicy gossip!"

    WILL AN ADJUSTMENT HURT ME?

"Is this week dragging, or is it just me!"

You may believe chiropractic adjustments will hurt, but during its growth in the health profession, many different types of adjustment methods have been developed to meet each person's various needs.

If you don't like the manual adjustment feeling then other methods may suit you, such as
Activator adjustments ...(this is where the Chiropractor adjusts you by using a hand held instrument that delivers a concentrated force to an area approximately the size of a 10 cent piece) .....or

Drop piece table adjustments ...(where you lay face down on a special table, the Chiropractor elevates a table section approximately 2-3 cms. The Chiropractor then places his/her hands on your subluxated area/s, while she/he makes the adjustment, the elevated table section drops to the neutral position ....or
Biomechanical blocking adjustments ...(while you lay face up or down, padded wedges are placed in different positions under your pelvis, your own body weight performs the adjustment.

HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO HAVE AN ADJUSTMENT?
"There's no greater thrill than finding a diet that really works!"

After visiting a Chiropractor and receiving treatment and advice, your response and requirements for further treatment will differ from others. Your lifestyle and medical history along with your approach to general health and your body's history of masking problems play a large role in the number of visits you may require.

It is important to remember that a healthy lifestyle, time out for yourself and exercising regularly are natural approaches and have a large influence on the length and speed of your healing process. Many patients enjoy visiting their Chiropractor, on a regular basis (once every 2-6 months) to reduce the possibility of 'masked problems' developing into more debilitating conditions.

WHOLISTIC APPROACHES AT ADJUST TO CHIROPRACTIC CARE
"Happiness is an inside job - so smile"

Ann utilises gentle wholistic methods including:
    • Activator adjustments (refer to pictures) - this is a small hand-held instrument that achieves an adjustment at a high velocity while you lay or sit in a neutral position. The speed/force can be adjusted for a baby through to an adult setting, while a special adapter is used for your delicate neck region.
    • Drop piece table adjustments(at present this table is only available at the Woodend clinic) - this is a modern height adjustable table divided into sections. A table section can be slightly raised, while you are lying in the face down position on the table, then a gentle chiropractic hand adjustment and table section drop together.
    • Biomechanical blocking - These are padded wedged blocks, which are placed in certain positions under your pelvis (while you lay face down) to use your body's own weight to help realign a functional pelvic distortion. Many patient's find these very comfortable.
    • Laser and/or T.E.N.S. therapy - These therapies can aid in the repair of tissues and control of pain. LASER therapy is gentle and painfree in its application. The Laser along with low force chiropractic adjustments, such as the Activator, is a great way to treat your CHILDREN.
    • Trigger point therapy - Each of your muscles can have a focal area (which can be painful), these usually respond to pressure resulting in a relaxation effect on your muscle. This can also aid in pain reduction and increase in blood flow and healing. These points can also be treated with the T.E.N.S. or Laser.
    • Soft tissue therapy - There are various muscle therapy treatments available depending on your individual needs, one is massage to increase your blood circulating to the area, increase muscle function, reduce any oedema present and assist healing of the area.
    • Rehabilitation exercises - These exercises which are given to you, are to reduce any muscle tightness, weakness or spasm you are experiencing and to increase your joint movement and muscle strength.
    • Preventive care and advice - This is advice given to you to help prevent re-occurrence of the same problem (where possible) in your work, home and/or recreational setting.

SPEND A COUPLE OF MINUTES CHECKING YOUR FOOTWEAR - IT’S WORTH IT

Shoes play an extremely important role in preventing injuries to your musculo-skeletal system, especially when exercising.

Check your shoes and replace them when necessary, look for:

1.Incorrect wear patterns. While it is normal for slight wear on the back outside corner of the heel, excessive wear can lead to incorrection foot
motion and over-stress put on joints.

    2. The crease on the top of the shoe, near the toes normally displays a straight line at right angles to your foot. A different angle can indicate incorrect foot motion, such as excessive pronation.

    3. The inside (medial) sections of the shoes should not bulge toward each other, this can also indicate problems, such as excessive pronation.

    4. If your feet, ankles, knees and/or hips ache, particularly when you stand on your feet for extended periods of time, this can indicate a problem needing to be analysed and corrected.

    5. Minimise wearing of high heels and shoes not providing good arch support.

    6. Seek reputable advice when purchasing sports shoes.

    Good sport shoes should:

    a. be suitable for the sport, weather and surface conditions to be played in.

    b. have the correct fit. Even with the correct fit, if you are prone to friction problems, try two pairs of natural fibre socks (eg. Pure cotton)

    c. have shock absorbing properties to prevent injuries from stress and incorrect foot motion.

    d. Have the heel counter sitting in the correct position, especially if orthotics or shock absorbing inner soles (eg. Silicone) are worn.

    e. possess good arch supports. If the shoes does not, you may need to purchase inserts to increase support in the foot arch area. Many shoes require you to remove the manufactured inner sole (which may be glued in) prior to inserting any other arch support inserts.

    f. have the laces done up firmly to prevent the foot moving/slipping in a forward/backward and/or sideway direction within the shoe.

Note: Do not assume because you have paid a lot of money for the shoes that they will fit and function correctly for your needs.

    “Smile—it’s contagious”

SCHOOL BAGS –TRENDY/SLICK? - BUT IS IT FITTING CORRECTLY?

  • Shoulder straps should be broad, padded and adjustable.
  • Use of waist and sternum straps should be encouraged, as this stabilizes the bag and reduces faulty shoulder and chest posture changes.
  • Buy a well fitted school bag that distributes the weight evenly and is worn correctly.
  • Bag weight (including contents) should be no more than 10% of the child’s boy weight.
  • Bag should be worn with top of bag at shoulder height (not low)
  • Lowest part of bag should not be lower than the child’s lower back.
  • Width of bag should not exceed the child’s chest width.
  • Place any heavy items to the base of the bag.
  • Where-ever possible child should keep contents to a minimum, placing any unnecessary items in a school locker.

“We can’t all be morning people?”

DOES YOUR MATTRESS DO YOU JUSTICE?

Many of us spend an average of 8 hours each night sleeping. That is, one-third of your life-time is spent in bed!! If your mattress and pillow do not support you correctly while you sleep on it, you are depriving your body of adequate rest and repair, before you even start your day!!
  • If possible, when buying a new mattress, try to find a store that will allow you a trial period and ensure the mattress has a guarantee to cover any manufacturing defects.
  • Ideally your mattress should be on rollers, enabling the bed to be shifted when needed with minimum back strain.
  • The mattress should also be able to support your weight if you are sitting on the edge and when you are lying on it, you should not roll into the middle or towards your partner (if a double/queen bed).
  • If your mattress has been designed to be turned, when was the last time you turned it, front to back as well as top to bottom?
  • The mattress and pillow/s need to support your body so when you are lying on your side, your spine is in a straight line from the tip of your head to your tail bone!
  • Avoid lying and/or sleeping on your front/stomach, this creates areas where muscles (and possibly joints and nerves) that are ‘on stretch’ and/or ‘cramped’ reducing blood flow and muscle relaxation along with additional pressure being placed on the lower back and neck spine and nerve regions.
  • If lying on your back, place support under your knees to reduce stress and pressure in your lower back.
  • If lying on your side, you may wish to reduce stress on pelvic and thigh areas by placing a pillow between your knees.
