BACKGROUND: WHO AND WHAT IS PILATES?

In the early 1900’s Joseph Pilates, a frail child who was determined to overcome his physical weakness, developed his own system of exercise with which he transformed himself into a diver, boxer, wrestler, gymnast and skier. He was later interned in World War 1 to use his knowledge for the rehabilitation of injured soldiers. It was during this time that he invented the first piece of Pilates equipment - the ‘Universal Reformer’. Since then he has developed many other pieces of Pilates equipment, including the ‘Cadillac’ and ‘Wonder Chair’. Josesph Pilates was also influenced by the dance world which added an intense focus on attention to detail and flowing movement. In recent times, pilates has been modified to accomodate the advances in our knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and injury/pathology treatment.

Practiced diligently, Pilates yields numerous benefits including: Increased lung capacity and circulation; improved strength and flexibility, particularly of the core; deep postural musculature, and coordination between mind and body. Posture, balance, and core strength are all increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time! Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into all areas of one’s life.
