    AIMS OF AFFORDABLE HEALING HANDS
To assist the client in maintaining a level of wellness that provides them with the style of living that they desire. This will be achieved through open discussion and feedback that ensures that the client is always in control of this aspect of their lives.

    RELAXATION (SWEDISH) MASSAGE
A gentle therapeutic massage consisting of continuous effleurage strokes with kneading and stretching of tight muscles that aims at reducing stress levels, stretches and tones muscles, relaxing the body and assisting the body to maintain homeostasis. This technique is the basis of many other styles of massage therapies. Involves the use of oils and takes about one hour for a full body massage.

    SPORTS (THERAPEUTIC) MASSAGE
This is generally a massage technique that assists to condition athletes before and after physical activity, and to help loosen and stretch muscles. It involves the use of deep effleurage and petrissage to the muscles which can result in the improved performance by the athlete. Regular sports massage can help speed up recovery, lower stress levels, promote greater endurance and flexibility, assists in injury prevention and enhances body awareness. Oil is sometimes used.

    DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Is generally slower than Swedish massage but goes deeper into the muscle and connective tissue to release chronic tension which might have developed from injuries or overuse. Deep tissue techniques can vary depending on the part of the body being massaged and can sometimes be painful.

    AROMATHERAPY
This involves a massage treatment using an oil that has been blended with the essence of a plant which is a little oily, very fragrant and usually too concentrated to use neat. Therefore they are blended with a carrier oil and different essential oils are used to treat emotional disorders, relieving stress, fluid retention, sleeping disorders, and anxiety, and help to enhance health, appearance and wellbeing.

    LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
This is a light, rhythmical massage that assists the natural flow of lymph through the superficial lymph system. This system has two main functions. One is it transports excess intercellular fluid back to the cardiovascular system. The other is to remove toxins and to prevent disease by treatment of pathogens in the lymph nodes. This system can become sluggish due to immobility, illness or excess muscle tension. This can produce feelings of lethargy and a decreased immune system response.

The aim of this massage is to promote the flow of lymph, and bring about an increased level of alertness and an improved feeling of wellness.

This type of massage can be a bit confronting the first time but the results are amazing, giving the receiver a renewed lease on life. It is well worth the experience and improvement in your wellness

    SHIATSU
A Japanese word meaning “finger pressure”, Shiatsu is both a form of physical manipulation and a means toward the growth of body, mind and spirit. Many of the techniques are applied to the same system of energy channels or “meridians” as used in acupuncture, although in Shiatsu each channel is felt to cover a greater area of the body. Shiatsu allows your mind, body and spirit to come into greater harmony so that you can look, feel and be healthier.

    CHINESE ACUPRESSURE
This is a treatment that is based on Chinese Philosophy and theory of yin-yang. The therapeutic movements promote the circulation of qi (life force energy) and blood through meridians of the body. They are designed to enhance and regulate body organ function, to release tension on muscles, tendons and ligaments as well as increase in the range of motion of all joints.

    REFLEXOLOGY
This is a treatment in which the souls of your feet represent a map of your body (including all your organs), and by working on specific parts of your feet, your body can be treated for various disorders. No oil is used. A treatment normally starts with a foot bath and takes about an hour to cover both feet.

    MOTHER CARE MASSAGE
Mother care massage involves the use of Swedish massage to help the pregnant lady to relax and gain control of her current state. It is aimed at reducing the aches and pains that she experiences as her pregnancy advances, and gives her back control of how she wishes to feel, with the ability to enjoy her pregnant condition. It may be considered as a return to the natural way of child birth free largely of the need for drugs. It ensures that the mother is relaxed and stress free, flexible but still has toned muscles, and the healthy. Massage also helps to reduce the effects of stretch marks after you child is born, enabling you a quicker return to normal life.

To enhance this, other massage modalities (see above) can also be used along with essential oils

The mother to be is also instructed on how she can better care for her body through self massage and exercise, and how to prepare herself for the birth of her child. She will be provided with self massage sheet for her shoulders, breasts, legs and feet.

This is all done in conjunction with and the approval by your own medical practitioner to ensure the absolute best for both herself and her child.

    BABY MASSAGE
It has been shown through medical research that baby massage makes them grow faster, and helps them to sleep better. If it is done on a regular daily basis, they will be healthier and happier babies.

Baby massage involves a moderate level of pressure to caress their skin in a stroking pattern over their whole body. This process also enhances the bonds that are developed between baby and parent as massage stimulates the release of endorphins which produce a feeling of well being and act a natural opiates reducing pain.

It also reduces muscle tension, accelerates the natural development of the skeletal system and improves the functioning of the immune and autonomic nervous systems.

Massage improves the function of a baby’s brain, heart and liver through enhanced circulation and flow of blood. It strengthens gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts enhancing the assimilation of nutrients and lessens symptoms of gas and colic.

If your baby is relaxed and sleeping, then so will you.

    What is Bowen Therapy?
This fascinating method is a dynamic bodywork technique that often results in rapid and lasting relief from pain and discomfort. It is safe to use on anyone, from new borns to the elderly and provides benefits from conditions such as sports injuries to a variety of chronic health problems.
The Bowen method stimulates the detoxification organs in the body such as the kidneys, liver and lymphatic system to rid the body of wastes and toxins, thus improving over-all immunity and preventing infections and disease.

For pregnant mothers, the Bowen method is excellent for relieving back pain due to changes in the body.

Simply stated, Bowen therapy is a unique, gentle and effective method that allows the body to heal itself and in my opinion one the most miraculous discoveries of natural medicine. Bowen therapy uses positive and negative moves that stimulate and isolate energy flow in specific regions of the body.

As a result of the Bowen method, tension in the body is usually dramatically reduced or completely alleviated. Inflammation is lessened and cysts and oedema may even disappear.

  • Common questions:

Do you have to be a certain age to undergo Bowen therapy?
No, the Bowen method is safe for everyone. It can be applied even to infants and the elderly as well as those with chronic health problems such as cancer or diabetes.

Does it make sense to undergo Bowen therapy when I currently do not have any health problems?
Just because you currently do not have any pain or discomfort does not mean that you will not have it in the future. The Bowen method is as effective in assisting in the prevention of disease as it is with dealing with disease. Regular Bowen sessions can strengthen your immune system as the lymphatic system will stay clear, your circulation will be stimulated so that your organs receive the blood supply they need and the nervous system will be activated allowing the functioning of all body systems. All in all, the Bowen method along with good nutrition and regular exercise is an excellent way to prevent disease.

What about if I am pregnant?
Although there are some minimal contraindications for using the Bowen method during pregnancy, as you will see when we discuss the coccyx procedure, most sequences can be used safely and are beneficial during pregnancy. Some sequences can even be applied while you are on your side. Ask your Bowen therapist for details if you are pregnant.

What if I have acute back pain? Can I still undergo Bowen therapy?
Yes, often the Bowen method can provide quick relief for acute back and neck pain and allow a healing environment for faster recovery.

Can I undergo the Bowen method if I have a fever?
Yes, the Bowen method can assist in reducing fever, in relieving aches and pains and in helping the clearing of the lymphatic system to strengthen the immune system.

How many Bowen sessions are required?
Usually the minimum amount of recommended sessions is three but you may require up to ten or more in certain chronic cases. After that it is a good idea to allow your body some time to heal itself.

If you have any questions about this or would like a treatment please contact Graham Schodde on 0438 191174 or call in at the I am Well Shop, 11 Eric Cres, Annerley

    WHAT IS NEUROSKELETAL THERAPY?

    Skeletal alignment without manipulation|
Neuroskeletal Therapy is a relatively new technique that provides non-judgmental, non-invasive, non-manipulative skeletal alignment through activation of innovative neurological transmission pathways in the Central Nervous System. Because it is non-manipulative and non invasive, it is safe to use from birth to old age without the possibility of causing damage to nerves, intervertebral discs or soft tissues. Due to its methodology and application, it can only improve function and mobility, dependent on the condition of the surrounding muscular structure.

    How does it work?
It operates through Neurological Transmission Points, which trigger an electrical feedback process in the Central Nervous System. The neurological impulse from the point, which is located at the intersection of the neural pathways and the lymphatic system, travels to the cerebral cortex via the sensory nervous system. A resulting neural transmission is then sent via the motor nerve system to the corresponding muscles or muscle groups, which activate to attain correct position of the joint. Muscles and muscle groups contract to provide the necessary adjustment bilaterally.

The brain itself controls the reaction, the patient therefore being in control of the entire process. Due to homeostasis, the natural inclination of the human body to restore balance, the brain will not create a trauma. The only requirement for treatment is that the muscles be completely relaxed to allow the reaction to occur i.e., the patient is prone and the muscles are not acting against the force of gravity.

The composite points for the entire skeleton have been mapped and utilized although most work is done in realigning the spine, it is possible to align the bones of the skull, the jaw bone (TMJ) and all of the peripheral joints of the body.

    LIMITATIONS
NeuroSkeletal Therapy cannot cure certain neurological or congenital bone deformation problems but it has proved itself in the maintenance of stability and reduction of the pain suffered by many patients with orthopedic conditions, thereby providing improved mobility and continued quality of life.
