WHAT IS MASSAGE?

Massage is the application of manual techniques to the body to relieve stress, prevent and treat injuries and to promote relaxation. Massage is useful in treating chronic injury, headaches, back and neck pain, sleep problems, fatigue and muscular dysfunction.

Massage stimulates the senses and restores function not only to muscles, but also joints and the nervous, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive systems. Massage is no longer associated with luxury alone, massage is a vital tool in maintaining body health, vitality and productivity.

The many benefits of massage can be obtained from a variety of techniques to suit individual needs.

SPORTS MASSAGE – can be used to promote recovery or to treat specific regions of pain and dysfunction.

RELAXATION – can be used for the relief of stress and associated problems, or if you want to indulge yourself. Longer flowing strokes are adopted and performed to the entire body or body regions.

MYOTHERAPY – can be used for specific regions of muscular pain, injury and dysfunction. A variety of techniques, including deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, stretching, rehabilitation exercises and cupping are adopted to relieve aching and contracted muscles which may refer pain or cause headaches.

THE AIM OF MASSAGE
Massage aims to relieve the body of pain, stress, fatigue and dysfunction, but also improve sleep, well being and productivity. The therapist does more than just treat symptoms, our aim is to educate our clients in self-management to ensure that they can maintain their musculoskeletal health. We will address posture, exercise, stretching, self-massage and stress management.

WHAT TO EXPECT
It is important before any body treatment commences a patient history is taken. This normally involves providing information about previous and current injuries or muscular problems, work, hobbies and exercise routines. Simple tests for normal range of movement, or flexibility and strength may be required. Different treatments require various levels of undressing (under garments may be left on), but for your privacy there is adequate draping of towels and covers. There are no set guidelines for the frequency of massage unless there is a specific injury. Regular treatments are recommended as they decrease the risk of injury, manage stress levels, and lead to increased productivity and vitality.
