Podiarty at Sports Lab
Podiatry is the study of the foot and lower limb. Our feet are said to be the foundation for our bodies and as such, influence the function of many structures above them. Most obviously, the feet influence the function of the knees and hips, but also influence all aspects of the kinetic chain.
The feet are very complex structures as they are made up of many bones and an intricate array of ligaments, tendons and muscles. A detailed understanding of the interaction between each of these structures is needed in order to make an accurate diagnosis of foot pathology.
Sports Lab utilises podiatry as part of the integrated therapies model for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as:
painful flat feet
hip pain
knee pain
shin splints
foot or calf muscle tears
peripheral vascular disease
thickened nails
general foot care
low back pain
neural pain in the legs or feet
arthritic pain
clawed toes or bunion formation
running or walking difficulties
diabetes effects on the feet
calluses, corns or plantar warts
footwear advice
Sports Lab has extensive affiliation with leading orthopaedic surgeons to ensure good understanding of surgical techniques and expected outcomes.
Sports Lab Podiatry services include a gait and dynamic foot biomechanics assessment, which can utilise computerised digital foot plate software. The patient is presented with a virtual picture of the heel to toe contact of the foot with the ground, in various speeds of gait. From these images, prescription orthotics and biomechanical corrections can be made. The therapist may also utilise plaster foot moldings to custom make prescription orthotics.
The practice also has a 25 metre run way for visual and video gait and running analysis. This means there is no need for treadmill analysis which has been shown to be inaccurate or unreliable in some research.
A full general podiatry and chiropody service is also provided at Sports Lab.
As with all assessments, podiatry is important for those people who have specific foot or leg injuries, as well as those with longer term pain that has not resolved. People who rely on good foot function for their income, living or recreation will benefit from a thorough foot assessment.
Podiarty at Sports Lab works in conjunction with Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage Therapy and Dietetics, to promote rapid recovery and minimise injury recurrence.
Our Method
Why Sports Lab?
The therapists at Sports Lab realised that many patients "shop around", looking for the best treatment solution for their pain or injury. This process can be time consuming, expensive and confusing. Which methodology is the best? Lots of time and money can be spent trying to answer this question, when in fact the best method is an integrated solution.
Sports Lab Integrated Spine and Sports Therapies offers the Ultimate Therapy System for all patients.
Total Body Care
Sports Lab offers a treatment program based on thorough musculoskeletal assessment, muscle testing and understanding of whole body movements as part of the kinetic chain. This system is beneficial for people of any activity level, from professional athletes to social players or overworked office workers.
Each person receives the innovative 3 therapists approach (see below) in conjunction with a customised exercise and self-maintenance program.
Integrated Assessment and Therapy
The system used at Sports Lab is unique and innovative because each person is assessed and treated by up to 3 disciplines simultaneously. This means that initially a physiotherapist, muscle therapist and chiropractor are on hand to assess the injury or pain, discuss the intricacies of the case and provide the best possible treatment.
Performance Enhancement Programs
Sports Lab can utilise modern technology such as computer imaging and digital video to help develop specific exercise, flexibility and strengthening programs to maximise the performance of any individual. This program is currently used by the University of Sydney Swimming Team to ensure peak performance of athletes throughout the training cycle.
Extensive Network
Sports Lab has a wide range of health practitioners at your disposal.
This network includes:
Physiotherapy
Chiropractic
Massage Therapy
Dietetics
Podiatry
Pilates
Acupuncture
Speech Therapy
Our method of integrating services means that you are able see any combination of our therapists, in the one session, in order to maximise the speed of your recovery and ensure the widest range of input into your treatment.
We know that this method is the most efficient form of allied health service available.
