Sports and Posture Management
SERVICES
Myotherapy is a broad term to describe therapy directed at soft tissue disfunction. I have been fortunate enough to have worked in various sporting, medical and corporate environments, which have shaped my unique 'brand' of myotherapy.
My particular areas of interest include neck pain and headaches, and acute and overuse sports injuries, specifically those involved with running and sports requiring running.
The muscles and joints of the upper neck are particularly succeptiable to stress, such as poor posture, core strength weakness, chronic miss-use, and biomechanical imbalance. By manually altering their current state, and addressing contributing factors - most commonly low back and abdominal weakness, I have had great success with neck pain, headache and migraine, and quite often with sinus and jaw pain.
Commonly seen sports injuries of the lower body include calf muscle strains, achilles pain, shin splints, ITB friction syndrome (the tendon on the outside of the thigh, pain at the knee) plantar fasciitis, buttock pain (piriformis syndrome) and low back pain.
In the upper body, rotator cuff strains (shoulder problems) in swimmers and those in throwing sports, overuse of the forearm/elbow such as tennis elbow/golf elbow and wrist problems in raquet sports.
I also enjoy helping people with acute pain problems such as lower back pain of disc or joint origin, and have had great success in achieving improvements and resolution in a very short space of time.
So how does a Myotherapist treat you, and how is it different to other physical therapies? It is highly variable both within the profession and across the professions, so it is best for me to describe what I do.
The manual (hands on) mobilising of muscle and surrounding tissues is perhpas the most fundamental modality. Essentially I act to 'stretch' a particular area, to restore it to its 'functional' length. This is quite often complented by mobilising of the joint/s within close proximity, which facilitates correct movement at that joint and improves overall function of the muscle/tendon/joint complex.
Sports massage is a fantastic tool to mechanically reduce tightness, knots and post exercise soreness in muscles and tendons. Regular treatment, can greatly benefit aspiring athletes!
In difficult or overly sensitive regions, 'dry needling' a type of medical acupuncture is particularly useful in encouraging a tight or knotted tissue to relax.
Electrotheraputic modalities such as ultrasound and TENS, stimulate the bodies own healing properties through manipulting circulation, by mechanically vibrating the tissues, and affecting the electrical properties of cells which greatly aide the healing process.
Taping techniques are also usefull, and I am especially fond of functional techniques, that is a way in which to encourage range of movement, while decreasing pain and facilitating healing in the still active person. Supportive or restrictive taping is extremely important when an acute pain is present, and is associated with a reasonably significant injury status.
