What is Eastern Suburbs Physiotherapy?


Eastern Suburbs Physiotherapy [E.S.P.] is a well-established practice in the Melbourne suburb of Nunawading. It doesn’t rely on gimmicks, just excellence in physiotherapy care. That’s why it has been around since 1984 and has grown solidly since then on its reputation for delivering excellent results in a caring and professional environment.

What sort of help are you looking for?

E.S.P. has an exceptional range of skills and experience to help you out.

Pain in the back or neck? Yes, you could live without it! Spinal work, postural correction, ergonomic guidance, massage and Kinesiology are all available to make life a lot easier for you.

Chronic headaches? It’s hard to get the most out of life with a headache lingering around. Many headaches have a neck component, which can be helped by skilful spinal treatment, postural corrections and massage. If tension and stress are the culprits then Stress relief techniques, Relaxation, Meditation and Kinesiology can make a big difference. These are all available at E.S.P.


Injured at work? At E.S.P. we have helped many injured workers from a wide variety of backgrounds, to return to their jobs. We work closely with your employer, rehabilitation provider and doctor to ensure the right outcome for you, either returning to your same duties or working out modifications that will work better for you. We have 23 years of experience doing this type of work at E.S.P.

Motor vehicle accident? We work within the guidelines of the Transport Accident Commission to provide you with the best treatment and rehabilitation from your motor vehicle accident and get you back on track as quickly as possible.

Sports Injury? You love your sport and want to be back in it asap, right? We have managed the whole range of sports injuries at E.S.P., so make use of our great experience and expertise to get you back into it FAST.

Neurological Disorders Anne Woodward is our specialist in Neurological conditions with 25 years experience in this area. She works closely with some leading neurologists in the eastern suburbs. She will treat, advise or manage your neurological condition.

At your initial consultation a through assessment will be made of your condition and a treatment plan formulated, which will give you a good idea of the duration and frequency of your treatments. If you are being managed by other health professionals such as a GP, we will keep them informed of your treatment and progress if you wish us to do so.

The Principals at Eastern Suburbs Physiotherapy [E.S.P.] are Cliff Woodward and Chris Woodman, and associate Anne Woodward. Just call us The Woodies! Between us we have over 75 years of clinical experience! See our bio’s below.

Where is Eastern Suburbs Physiotherapy?

We are situated just one minute walk from Nunawading Railway Station, very close to the intersection of Springvale Road and Whitehorse Road.



Cliff Woodward

Cliff trained at the Sheffield City Polytechnic, U.K., gaining membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1978. After arriving in Australia in 1979, he worked at St Vincent’s Hospital and the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, before going into private practice and establishing Eastern Suburbs Physiotherapy in 1984.

Cliff has worked with one of Australia’s leading plastic surgeons in the pre and post-operative treatment of hand-surgery patients including microsurgical work. Cliff’s other main interest areas are back/neck problems, postural problems and the treatment and prevention of injuries in musicians. He has had articles published in the Journal of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and Physiotherapy Today and he has lectured on post graduate and under graduate courses to physiotherapists, occupational therapists and musicians.

Cliff has a strong interest and involvement in holistic, complementary medicine. His studies in this area include Yoga, Rolfing, Meditation and Kinesiology. In September 2000 he qualified as a Kinesiology Practitioner and Member of the Australian Kinesiology Association. He is founder of the Way of Peace Meditation Group [a non-profit organization]. He is married to Anne and they have three children.


Chris Woodman

Chris Woodman B.Ed., B.App.Sci., MAPA, Principal

Chris graduated from Sydney University in 1990 and worked initially at the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital in Shepparton before moving to work at the Geelong Sports Medicine Centre.

In 1992 he took up the position of Physiotherapy Director at McKinnon Sports Injuries Centre before joining E.S.P. in 1995.

Prior to studying physiotherapy, Chris worked as a physical education teacher in state secondary schools and was himself and active sportsman.

He has participated in a wide range of sporting activities including five years as a senior player with the Melbourne Football Club. Chris was team physiotherapist with the Melbourne Reds in the Australian Baseball League from 1992 to 1995 and the Box Hill Football Club from1996 to 1998. He has also travelled with the Victorian team in the Teal Cup.

Chris is interested in the treatment and management of musculo-skeletal injuries. He is a member of the Occupational Health Group of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and is a consultant to a major international company, advising them on the management of work-related injuries. He has a particular interest and expertise in treating injuries of the shoulder and elbow.

Chris is a preferred provider for several health funds, including MBF and HBA. Members of these insurers receive a higher treatment rebate from their funds.


Anne Woodward

Anne trained at the Sheffield School of Physiotherapy, UK, gaining membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1977. Anne worked at Rotherham Hospital and the Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, before coming to Australia in 1979.

Anne has followed a strong interest in Neurology and Aged Care and was Deputy Chief Physiotherapist at Mount Royal Hospital, Melbourne from to .She has worked with the Neurosciences Unit at Box Hill Hospital, Melbourne, which includes a specialist Stroke Unit, since 199….

Anne has undertaken post-graduate training in Vestibular dysfunction and rehabilitation and thus has a special interest in the areas of dizziness, falls prevention and balance problems as well as other neurological conditions. Anne is married to Cliff and they have three children.
