About Erica Gustavsson
LCH (UK) AROH MAHA
Erica was born in Adelaide and moved to Wales with her parents and large family in 1973. Her family later returned to Adelaide in 1981, but Erica stayed on to pursue a nursing career at St Bartholomew’s Teaching Hospital in central London. She specialised in cardio-thoracic nursing for several years but became disillusioned with orthodox medicine and more and more interested in preventative treatment as time went by.
In 1993 she undertook a 4 year part-time Licentiate course at the College of Homeopathy in London, followed by a year’s Registration programme with the Society of Homeopaths. She worked within a busy Medical Practice in Kent for 6 years, taking referrals from the GPs. She also had 2 practices in Middlesex and 1 in Surrey for 3 years prior to moving to Tasmania in August 2003.
She regularly attends seminars and post-graduate courses, as part of her commitment to continuing professional development. She lives on the premises in New Town with her husband, Stuart Davis, who also practises from the home address (New Town Osteopathy).
In 2005, Erica appeared on the ABC TV “Second Opinion” programme, discussing the benefits of homeopathic treatment for a child with eczema.
She also teaches small groups interested in prescribing remedies in acute conditions.

What is Homeopathy, how does it work?
Homeopathy was first utilized in Tasmania in the 1870s, and in 1899 the Hobart Homeopathic Hospital (now St John’s) was established. Two years later, the Launceston Homeopathic Hospital (now St Luke’s) was also set up and both hospitals provided quality homeopathic care to the community for many years.
The principles of homeopathy were first enunciated in ancient Greece. Homeopathy was then scientifically developed over 200 years ago by a brilliant German physician and chemist, Samuel Hahnemann. It is a gentle, yet powerful form of medicine which stimulates your immune system into action when your body has been overwhelmed by mental/emotional and physical stresses.
Homeopaths, like many other therapists, agree that symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole body, not simply a diseased part. Therefore, in addition to providing only symptomatic relief for the short term, homeopathy focuses on the causative features of disease, thus producing long term improvement in health.
Advantages of Homeopathy
• Homeopathic remedies are derived from animal, vegetable and mineral sources in minute doses, which make them safe from side effects, even during pregnancy.
• They may be taken alongside any other medications and, in consultation with your GP, can reduce or remove the need for some regular orthodox medications.
• Animals are not used for testing homeopathic remedies.
• Homeopathic remedies taste very nice!
What Happens in the Consulting Room?
The homeopathic consultation is quite different from your conventional visit to the GP. Apart from discussing your current symptoms and medical history, you will be asked about your food preferences, sleeping patterns, your fears, moods and lifestyle—in fact, all details necessary in order to build up a complete picture about yourself. This can take between 1 to 1.5 hours.
What can be Treated?
Other than mechanical injuries or conditions requiring surgery, homeopathy is used to treat ailments such as:
- Allergies
- Anorexia and bulimia
- Ante-natal and post natal problems, eg. nausea, breastfeeding difficulties, tiredness, depression
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Arthritis, tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome
- Childhood diseases, growing pains

- Depression, grief
- Digestive disorders, eg. Mouth and stomach ulcers, indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac and Crohn’s diseases
- Ear, nose and throat conditions, eg. otitis media/ externa, nosebleeds, sinusitis, hayfever, persistent colds and flu, recurrent tonsillitis
- Eczema, psoriasis, warts, vitiligo, tinea, Sports injuries/physical trauma
- Female problems, eg. Irregular, painful or heavy periods, PMT, cysts, fibroids, mastitis, endometriosis, menopause and infertility
- Headaches, Migraines, Hyperactivity
- Infections—thrush, cold sores, glandular fever, fungal infections, worms
- Kidney and Gallbladder disorders—bedwetting, incontinence, cystitis, prostatitis, gout, gallstones
- Multiple sclerosis, Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), Skin conditions, eg. acne, cradle cap, dandruff,

- ...in fact, any health complaint.
The Homeopathic Prescription
Remedies are prescribed either in the form of tiny white dissolvable milk sugar pills, or as a liquid. Liquid remedies are suspended in alcohol and diluted in water. For acute illnesses (i.e. short, severe symptoms such as a cold, stomach upsets etc.), you will be asked to take them more often than for long term and deeper seated conditions.
Follow Up Appointments
You will be asked to return in 2 to 3 weeks when questions will be asked about what changes or developments have occurred. These changes may include a feeling of well being or you may notice some symptoms getting temporarily worse. This is in fact a good sign indicating a natural response as the remedy takes effect, and will soon pass.
Generally, 3 to 4 visits are needed for good results, then less frequently as your health improves. However, individuals respond in different ways and deep-seated problems may take some months to restore.
