Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage seeks to remedy and bring about change in muscle tissue.
Promote circulation and relax damaged tissue.
TREATMENT PROCEDURE
The aim of a Remedial Massage is to treat dysfunction causing the pain and to improve range of movement. Progress then is to measure in terms of increased range of movement, increased strength and reduce abnormal contraction.
An assessment is vitally important for each client, to describe their pain, does it occur when at rest or during movement, is it dull or sharp etc Describe the injury, was it a twisting movement or did they lift a heavy object? An Assessment, checks posture and structural changes, stretch muscle, check range of movement, compare with “pair” joint or muscle. Check active movement, passive movement and resisted movement.
Then a treatment procedure/plan is the next step which aims to decrease or eliminate pain and to release contracted muscle fibers so that underlying structures can be examined. Treatment components most often used during this phase would include soft tissue techniques, passive stretching and M.E.T. applied gently and with care.
Treatment during the corrective phase is aimed at treating the dysfunction causing pain and to improve Range of Movement. This would include deeper soft tissue techniques, pressure techniques, MET, self treatment eg. Active stretching.
During the preventive phase the aims are to prevent further injury to the affected area, and to avoid recurrence of the injury. The responsibility rests with the client to maintain a flexibility program, continue with strengthening exercises and soft tissue techniques.
Trigger Point
Trigger points are located through palpation, that is, by touch. Generally Trigger points are located within taut bans of tissue that snaps back when stroked, much like guitar string. The trigger point is tender when touched and elicits referred pain in a predictable pattern.
Trigger point speeds up recovery time, that is if follow up exercise and stretches are performed regularly by client.
