HISTORY - TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
It is believed that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was developing in China from over 3,000 years ago. TCM is a study if health. Chinese medical philosophy came from the same philosophical grounding that was the basis for the development of Taoism (Daoism), and Taoism in turn, heavily influenced the progression of TCM.
Taoism – being a study of natural order, nature itself and man’s interrelation with it – is a key aspect of the concise natural medical methodology we know today as TCM. Expressions of which are Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Acupressure Massage.
A Classical Chinese Medical Doctor’s skill was not measured by how well he treated disease. On the contrary, it was how healthy his patients remained that was indicative of his level of mastery.
My goal is to maintain this principle and play my part in promoting the health, quality and longevity of my life and yours.
TAOISM
Taoism (pron dao-ism) is a way of living. It is a study of the seasons, natural order and freedom of life expressed by following natural principles. Taoism is not a religion or spiritual institution; it is a way of understanding life and a way of discovering and releasing your inner nature from a place of clarity and resolution.
According to Taoist thought there are three major elements in the world in which we live: Heaven, Earth and Man. It is believed that as man’s feet stand on the Earth and head is in the Heavens, it is our duty to bring both together. Achieving this means living in harmony with the guiding principles of both Heaven and Earth – equating to a healthy Mind/Spirit and a healthy Body.
ACUPRESSURE MASSAGE
Energy animates matter. The Tao is the energy and intention that governs all things. The Tao is represented within us as Qi (Chi). So Qi is the energy that animates us.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has mapped out the pathways of the human energy system. These pathways are referred to as meridians and form the rivers that Qi flow through, connecting organs, bone, muscle tissue and body functions. Each meridian is linked with a specific organ, however given the understanding of interrelation, each meridian is not limited to influencing just that one organ.
It must be noted that organs in TCM are seen differently to the Western Medical paradigm. In TCM each organ has a corresponding emotion, colour, season, energetic function and much more. The organs are not limited to the physical space they reside in, but are extended throughout the body. For example the Lungs are also the skin and body hair; the Liver is also the tendons, nails and eyes; the Heart is also the veins and blood vessels; the Kidneys are also the ears and bones; the Spleen is also the mouth and muscle tissue. (Please understand that this is only a very brief description but hopefully enough for a basic conceptual understanding.) Given this, your internal condition can be perceived and diagnosed through the outward expressions of your body.
Along each meridian are specific points (Acupoints) which when manipulated, directly and indirectly effect the organs and energetic functions there of. Through Acupressure Massage balance can be restored to the body by encouraging the body to heal itself.
