WHY OSTEOPATHY?
The body has a fantastic ability to heal itself. However, if it cannot due to age or injury it will do the best job it can. In such cases the body will make changes or compensations to adapt to the condition. This will help the person cope in the short term, but will eventually lead to greater problems in the future if left unresolved.
Osteopathy is able to treat not only the symptoms of the condition, but also find and resolve the original problem. This will leave the spine or painful joints in the very best condition possible. My aim to provide you with the best, and most effective treatment possible.
A caring approach and attention to the patient’s individual needs are especially important, making osteopathy by far the most established, respected and utilised of all complementary therapies.
WHAT CAN OSTEOPATHY TREAT?
The application of osteopathic treatment is very wide. Any pain is a symptom of a problem and should be diagnosed and where appropriate treated using osteopathy. It is important to me that you understand your condition, so it will be explained fully to you. Where necessary home exercises and advice will be given to enable you to help your own condition.

WHY ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing dating back to China some seven thousand years ago. Treatment begins with a diagnosis of the individual’s energy imbalance. The energy of the body, mind and spirit is distributed through twelve main energy pathways called meridians, each associated with a major organ. Over or under activity of any of these pathways will cause the organ to malfunction and ill health will result.
Organ malfunction is diagnosed mainly through pulse and tongue examination. These signs, along with many others will form the basis of diagnosis and enable Dr Matthews to formulate a course of treatment necessary to re-establish good health.
WHAT CAN ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?
The application of acupuncture is very wide... ...recent research has shown how effective it is when treating female infertility. Other commonly treated conditions are...joint and muscle sprains…symptoms of osteo-arthritis...migraines….stress...menstrual problems...allergies...asthma...irritable bowel syndrome...circulatory problems...poor vitality...lethargy…and may more.
Treatment is established by inserting very fine sterile stainless steel needles into acupuncture points just under the surface of the skin. The needles are left for about twenty minutes, after which the patient usually feels very calm and relaxed. As the balance of energy improves, so health improves. There is absolutely no risk of cross infection from acupuncture needles.
Dr Matthews trained at the European School of Osteopathy, the foremost osteopathy training college in the World. Having studied for four years he graduated in 1986 and went on to study Traditional Chinese Medicine at the British College of Acupuncture. Following two more years training he graduated with honours in 1989.
When you visit Dr Matthews for the first time a detailed analysis of the movements of your body is combined with orthopaedic examination to reveal the underlying cause of pain. This assessment will then be considered alongside various lifestyle factors such as work and leisure activities to enable a full diagnosis and suitable treatment plan to be determined for you. He will combine his skills in both Osteopathic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine to discover the cause of your problem, which will then be fully explained to you.
A treatment plan will be suggested which may include osteopathy and acupuncture combined or alone. You will always have the absolute choice over which type of treatment you receive. Treatment will last around thirty minutes, sometimes more, or less, depending on the nature of the problem. Immediately after treatment it is common to feel a little sore for a short while.

WHAT IS CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY?
When the body is subjected to trauma such as birth or other injury the subtle motion of the skull can become disrupted and the health of the body be disturbed. Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle manual treatment that restores normal movement in the body, and allows healthy function to return to the body.
WHAT DOES TREATMENT INVOLVE?
It is a common belief that babies and children should have no structural stresses or strains in their bodies, because they are 'so young'. The reality is very different. Birth is one of the most stressful events of our lives. The baby is subjected to enormous forces, as the uterus pushes to expel the baby against the natural resistance of the birth canal. The baby has to turn and twist as it squeezes through the bony pelvis, on its short but highly stimulating and potentially stressful journey. The baby's head has the remarkable ability to absorb these stresses in a normal delivery. In order to reduce the size of the head, the soft bones overlap, bend and warp as the baby descends.
During treatment your child will feel light pressure on different parts of the head and maybe some gentle movement of the body .No pain or discomfort will be experienced.
WHAT CHILDREN'S CONDITIONS DO I TREAT?
Babies: distressed and irritated babies, feeding difficulties, sickness colic and wind, sleep disturbances and many more. Babies can be treated soon after birth, and we recommend that all babies be checked within the first 6 weeks.
Growing Children: ear infection and glue ear, behavioral problems and learning difficulties, head injuries, asthma.

If untreated, the bony plates stay overlapped, or under strain. This causes tension of the membranes that encase the brain and nerves. In turn this can lead to joint problems in the head, neck and back causing natural functions like feeding and sleping to be disturbed. If these problems are left undetected then later in childhood conditions like headaches, ear aches, sinus problems and learning difficulties may occur.
