With over four years experience in the healthcare industry, Susan specialises in the treatment of lymphoedema (lymphedema), injury management and relaxation. Her treatments are specifically designed for each person. With a background as a Remedial Massage Therapist and Reflexologist, she combines knowledge from each area of expertise.
Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system doesn’t function correctly. Protein and fluid build up in the body tissues, and because the lymphatic system cannot remove it swelling occurs.
The lymphatic system can be disrupted for many reasons; one of the most common of these is lymph node removal during surgery for treatment of cancer. Radiation therapy can also trigger lymphoedema, these are both secondary causes. People can also be born with insufficient or impared lymphatics, this is known as primary lymphoedema.
Lymphoedema Therapy (also known as Complex Physical Therapy (CPT), Complex Lymphatic Therapy (CLT), or Complex Decongestive Physical Therapy (CDPT)) aims to manage and reduce lymphoedema, primary or secondary and is comprised of five main aspects of treatment:
• Manual Lymphatic Drainage
• Bandaging and Compression Garments
• Skin Care
• Decongestive Exercise
• Home Program
Lymphoedema Therapy is fabulous for post surgical treatment (e.g. post mastectomy), lymphoedema brought on by radiation therapy and primary lymphoedema. Perfect for relieving arthritis, swollen ankles, sinus headaches and essential for those with reduced lymph flow.
