What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen is a modality of healing established in Australian during the sixties and seventies by Geelong 'Osteopath' Tom Bowen. It was popularized by students of Tom in the eighties following his death. Having achieved unprecedented international acclaim the technique is taught and practiced world wide. It is a lubricant free body work which has few contraindications and is safe to use on almost everyone. It can be applied through loose clothing and a session may take between 30 and 45 minutes.
How does Bowen Therapy work?
There are few explanations for how Bowen works. The most popular theory explains how the technique uses a series of cross fibre moves to stimulate the soft tissue (fascia) found between the muscles and skin. The effect creates a window of opportunity for the fascia to become re-hydrated which in turn assists the structures housed within this tissue. These structures include nerves, muscles, lymph, vascular structures and organs. Improved function in these structures leads to improved general health.
The Treatment:
Bowen Therapy is both gentle and yet profound. It does not require oil and can be performed through clothing. During a session your therapist will carry out a series of moves interrupted by rest periods, which are essential to the process. Allow yourself to relax, as falling asleep will enhance the treatment. For most conditions Bowen therapy generally requires two to three sessions, spaced approximately a week apart. Acute situations your sessions may be daily, or as situation requires. Chronic conditions you may require regular long term treatments usually set at weekly visits. Maintenance, depending on lifestyle, may need monthly sessions, more frequent if required.
