About Osteopathy
Adapted from the AOA website
Osteopathy is a holistic system of manual health care that aims to determine the root cause of problems as opposed to simply treating the symptoms. The techniques can range from heavy manipulation (ie. 'joint clicking') to extremely subtle and gentle techniques. For that reason it is an ideal form of treatment for patients ranging from infants to the elderly.
The human body operates in much the same way as a machine, with all parts interrelated, and with structure being closely related to function. Further to this and extending the machine analogy further, damage to one part can have adverse effects on other systems or organs.
Underlying this theory is our belief that the human body has all of the necessary elements to attain, and maintain, optimal health, and an in-built repair system that enables us to recover from injury and disease.
As with any system in the body, this in-built repair system functions best when the machine is functionally sound. By using clinically developed techniques, that promote sufficient blood flow, osteopaths help maintain optimal function of the internal organs, which in turn promotes and maintains the body’s balanced production of natural chemicals.
As part of the holistic, or ‘whole person’, approach to optimal health, osteopaths also consider the roles of appropriate exercise programs, a healthy diet and nutrition, and emotional well being (through techniques such as stress reduction exercises and strategies) as important factors in your treatment.
In a nutshell, the aim of osteopathy is to restore the individual’s natural abilities to heal, by using a combination of biomechanics, lifestyle improvements, and healthy nutrition.
In Australia, Osteopathy has been practiced since 1909 and, as well as the United States, is widely practiced throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and New Zealand.
For the treatment of:
Techniques are selectively chosen on an individual basis depending on patient preference and necessity.
These techniques include:- Soft Tissue Massage
- Articulation/General Osteopathic Technique (GOT) – joint mobilisation via passive movement which increases joint mobility.
- High Velocity Thrust techniques (joint manipulation)
- Muscle Energy Technique (MET) – resisted muscle contractions used to stretch muscles and mobile joints.
- Counterstrain – A gentle technique that involves holding tight muscles in positions where they are comfortable until they begin to relax and unwind.
- Functional Technique – Similar to Counterstrain except utilises breathing as a mechanism to unwind muscles and restricted joints.
- Osteopathy in the Cranial Field (OCF) – Originally founded by the Osteopath, Dr W. G. Sutherland. This technique involves working with the movement of fluids, cranial bones and membranes within the body, to help restore health that may otherwise be impeded. This is extremely gentle and ideal for babies that have suffered birth trauma but can be used on patients of all ages. It is also commonly known as Craniosacral therapy in other circles.
- Biodynamics of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field – based on an expansion of the OCF theory by Dr J. Jealous, D.O. This is another gentle but potent technique working with respiration and fluid drive within the body to encourage it to thrive. This is an ideal technique for patients who have had poor results from other treatment modalities or patients who feel constantly run-down as it focuses on looking for health within the body rather than disease.
What to expect
From experience, most Osteopaths can provide rapid relief from most complaints in a small number of treatments.
An initial consultation will consist of a thorough medical history being taken so as to understand the influence of previous or current conditions and help determine the risk of any more serious conditions.
A thorough diagnosis will then be performed using standard Orthopaedic testing and Osteopathic diagnosis using the Osteopath’s palpation skills (highly trained sense of touch.)
Treatment will then commence using the most appropriate techniques for your age, condition and preferences.
Following treatment, the Osteopath may prescribe preventative or rehabilitative exercises and/or stretches, as well as advise you on work posture, exercise and sports technique.
If follow-up is required, you may need to return for further assessment but most conditions require only a brief number of treatments. The Osteopath’s goal is to get you better quickly and provide you with tools so you can look after yourself. After that, you may wish to consult your Osteopath for the odd “grease and oil change” if and when you require it.
