What is osteopathy
Osteopathy is a type of manual medicine that focuses on the musculoskeletal system of the body. It is based on an approach where we believe the body operates as one functional unit and all the systems of the body (such as muscles, bones, connective tissues, joints, immune system, nerves etc) should be in balance to maintain normal function.
Osteopaths also believe in the ability for the body to heal itself. Sometimes this process is slowed or stalled and just requires a push in the right direction. Hence osteopaths are required to detect any change in the body, not just where the pain is, to help restore equilibrium and homeostasis.
Osteopaths also offer personal advice on stretching or strengthening exercises, correct lifting postures, ergonomics, diet, posture and stress management.
Osteopathic services
At Total Balance Health Care, our osteopaths tailor a treatment to your specific problems to ensure the best results are achieved. This is done by the use of a thorough history and examination.
On initial consultation with the osteopath, you will be taken a detailed history in which your current complaint will be discussed. This will be followed with a complete examination running through various movements and tests to determine the cause of your complaint.
The osteopath will discuss with you what has been found and what the recommended treatment. Treatment will then commence to finish off the consultation.
The initial consult will last for approximately 1 hour. Any subsequent treatments will be for 30 minutes.
During all consultations, the osteopath will frequently discuss your progress and prognosis so that you are comfortable and fully understand your treatment process. At all times, you are welcome and encouraged to ask any questions that you have.
