SERVICES What Is Five Element Constitutional Acupuncture? (5ECA)
5ECA is an ancient form of holistic therapy that treats body, mind and spirit. Treatment is centred on you as a person, not just on your symptom. This style is especially effective for people with problems of an emotional nature, such as stress, depression, anxiety and insomnia, as well as people with physical problems.
What Are the Five Elements?
The 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) represent the fundamental building blocks or different types of energy in nature. Each of the 5 elements has its own particular quality, both in nature and in you. Your constitutional element is the one which plays the most dominant role in the way you experience life, and your overall health and well-being. Look below to see what your constitutional element might be!
FIRE
Fire is the element of Summer and is associated with the emotion of joy. Fire is all about connection and relationship. Fire people love to laugh and tend to be the ones that light up a room. They can also carry a sadness or lack of joy deeper inside. The Fire element has a lot to do with the Heart – love, emotional warmth, closeness and intimacy. These are the things that Fire longs for, but in imbalance they tend to be areas of difficulty. Disharmony in any element will tend to manifest as either too much or too little of certain emotions or behaviours. For example, a Fire person may be compulsively cheerful or may be lacking joy in their life; they may be emotionally vulnerable or may shut others out; they may need constant company or may isolate (to give just a few examples).
An example of an acupuncture point combination for a Fire person might be:
Outer Frontier Gate - which works to harmonise your inner environment with what's going on around you, helping to give you strength and security on the inside to enable you to connect outwardly with others.
Inner Frontier Gate – which works to connect you with your inner self, your own Heart – to put you in touch with what you really feel and what you really want out of life.
EARTH
Earth is the element of Late Summer (sometimes called Indian summer), the time of harvest. It is associated with the emotion of sympathy. Earth is all about nourishment and nurturing. Earth people have the ability to nourish, nurture and support others, like a mother with her child. Earth is also about our ability to take in and absorb nourishment, both in terms of the food we eat and the emotional caring and support that others offer. Earth people are sometimes inclined to look after the needs of others, but can feel a little neglected themselves. In disharmony an Earth person may be overly mothering/smothering, or they may be unsupportive; they may be excessively needy, or they may repress their own needs; they may be excessively dependent or overly independent (to give just a few examples).
An example of an acupuncture point combination for an Earth person might be:
Receive Fullness – which will help an Earth person be open to receiving the care and support of others, enabling them to feel nourished and nurtured.
Abundant Splendour – gives a person a glimpse of the richness, abundance and prosperity which can be available to them.
METAL
Metal is the element of autumn and is associated with the emotion of grief. Metal is all about finding the purest essence and quality in all aspects of life, and letting go of the waste that is left. Metal people set the highest standards for themselves and others. It is important that they feel respected, and they sometimes strive to be high achievers. Metal people can seek to connect with what is pure and spiritual to such a degree that they can feel cut off from others. Alternatively they may feel cut off from the inspiration and purity offered by meaningful, authentic spirituality. In disharmony a Metal person might crave quality and purity excessively, or they may feel messy and polluted; they may long for connection or may cut themselves off; they may be very deeply moved, or may be cold, inert and nonchalant (to give just a few examples).
An example of some acupuncture points to treat a Metal person might be:
Middle Palace – restores connection with spirit and nature, the pure essence of existence.
Meridian Gutter – clears out the rubbish. Enables the Metal person to let go of what is no longer needed - physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually.
Water
Water is the element of winter and is associated with the emotion fear. Water is all about stillness and movement. It is about overcoming obstacles - either around, over, under or through. Water people have a persistence and determination and will often excel in situations that others find too scary. Fear produces either stillness or movement, and Water people can be driven to excessive movement/activity or may be frozen by fear. In disharmony Water people may be given to excessive risk-taking, or may be over-cautious, always fearing the worst; they may be excessively driven/ambitious, or may lack drive and motivation; they may find it difficult to trust others, or may be overly trusting.
Some acupuncture points to treat a Water person might be:
Water Spring – provides movement for the Water person who is frozen rigid with fear, and feeling stuck and stagnant in life. Helps to clear stagnation and return a sense of flow in all aspects of being.
Storehouse – the excessive drive of some Water people can lead to a depletion of energy reserves. This point calms the system and makes energy reserves more available.
WOOD
Wood is the element of spring and is associated with the emotion of anger. Wood is all about pushing forward, like a tree moving toward its source of light. It is about seeing a path for growth, planning a direction and implementing the action of forward movement. Vision, planning, decision making and action are the domain of the Wood element. Wood people can be flexible in the face of obstacles, or they may be rigid and become stuck, which leads to frustration and anger. In disharmony Wood people may be excessively assertive and direct, or they may be overly passive and indirect; they may be excessively organised, or may be a bit chaotic and disorganised; they may be frustrated and defiant or over-obedient and compliant.
Some acupuncture points to treat a Wood person might be:
Gate of Hope – when the Wood person can see no future, there is no plan, no growth, no movement. They may feel stuck and frustrated. This point opens a gate, giving a fresh view of things and hope for the future.
Supreme Rushing – also known as "Happy Calm", this point can restore smoothness and balance when the Wood person is agitated or inclined to "fly off the handle".

QUALIFICATION DETAILS I have completed a four year degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the University of Technology, Sydney. My studies post graduation have focused on Constitutional Five Element Acupuncture. This style of acupuncture has proved to be incredibly rewarding for me, both as a practitioner and a patient. I continue to receive regular treatment and continue to reap the benefits in terms of my own personal growth and well being.
I have a real passion for acupuncture, especially 5 element style, and feel truly grateful to be able to work doing what I love. I'm also interested in meditation and the many and various means of developing consciousness.
Before discovering acupuncture my main passion was music. I worked as a struggling guitarist / songwriter in a band for many years! I still play regularly in a covers band, more for fun nowdays.
Other than that, I spend as much time as possible at home with my wife Jane and our baby daughter, Eloise (born late Jan '08).
