The origins of health are found within,,,

We aim to maintain this view through our approach to health care and its' provision to the individual and the greater community.

Ki is viewed as the essence of all matter and energy, and represents the continuous motion and change between these two states. Energy is constantly being manifested into the physical, tangible world, and matter is constantly being transformed back into energy. The point between these two is where we find Ki - as part of the infinite spectrum of all energy and matter, where light and dark, solid and immaterial things meet.

Ki is synonymous with the Chinese equivalent 'Qi' (pronounced 'Chee') and the understanding of these energies that exist in ourselves, our immediate environment, and the world at large govern a substantial amount of traditional (and modern) Asian lifestyles. Feng Shui utilises these natural laws for tasks such as the arrangement of rooms, houses, and cities to encourage the continual flow of the energies of the earth and the universe.

Any disruption to the flow of energy within the body or the larger environment can affect it negatively, and create disharmony and act as a precursor to disease. An example is the way that stress can affect the mind and body; a seemingly subtle level of stress maintained over time can manifest far worse problems. Stressed states stimulate the sympathetic nervous system and adrenal hormones (cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline) which inhibit the immune system in a 'fight or flight' response. If this process carries on for an extended period of time, the immune compromised person is more susceptible to infections and internal disorders. This can culminate in chronic tiredness, loss of appetite, or complete physical exhaustion.

The laws of nature incorporate our selves and all other things, with any disruption to the interaction of these 'parts' affecting the whole, both individually and collectively. This forms the basis of the Eastern view of health and the maintenance of it, incorporating all aspects of oneself into everyday life - spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical. All parts are integral to the function of the whole, and none is greater than the other. Hence naturalism and holism form the basis for much traditional medicine and health practices.

The Benefits of an Active Lifestyle

Everyone is aware that being active and engaging in regular exercise helps their physical fitness. But what about the mind?

Emotions, moods, feelings and our mental health are intrinsically tied into our physical wellbeing and health. An increased level of physical fitness obtained through regular cardiovascular exercise and resistance training can help to improve all aspects of health and wellness via chemical changes in the brain and nervous system.

An increase in physical activity can help to normalize the stress hormones such as adrenaline and nor-adrenaline; which are released as part of the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism of the body. This response is meant to last for a short time, not for extended periods during work and home crises etc.

When our bodies release adrenal hormones into the blood stream, we experience heightened awareness and physical endurance – however, this is short lived and when engaged for long periods this hormonal system inhibits the normal functioning of the immune system.

Have you been on holidays and gotten sick within the first few weeks? This response is a healthy one and is the body’s way of recovering after being suppressed for so long by stress and sedentary lifestyles.

In order to experience full health and wellbeing we need to acknowledge the link between the mind and the body – our energies are tied into our emotions, feelings, thoughts and desires.

Other benefits of regular exercise are:

  • Increased metabolic rate and adaptive response to changed environmental circumstances.
  • Reduced cholesterol levels and increased cardiovascular health.
  • Lowered stress levels and increased energy levels.
  • Reduced risk of lifestyle illness such as diabetes type 2.
  • Increased muscular strength and endurance.

What we do, eat, think, feel, and emote are all related to one another in a holistic framework. By engaging in at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day and enjoying an active lifestyle, we can help to minimize stress and maximize enjoyment of life and it’s cornucopia of possibilities.

The key to exercise efforts is regularity; by doing a little each day; committing to what your lifestyle allows at present there will be a cumulative gain in fitness over time.
