■ Benefits of Massage:
The following are commonly recognised benefits of massage:
● Autonomic Nervous System (ANS):
Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems work collaboratively to maintain homeostasis through a feedback system. Here the mind body link is well understood as emotion increase body’s release of natural body chemicals into the blood stream during massage, which enhance relaxation, healing and pleasurable emotions.
The general effects of massage on ANS can produce positive changes in mood and excitement, relaxation, stress dissipation, healing and a sense of well being.
● Circulatory Enhancement:
○ Arterial blood flow is increased which increased, increasing oxygen flow to invigorate and heal soft tissue. Oxygenation is a recognised therapy which assists cleansing the body of pathogens.
○ Venous Return Flow. Massaging distally and working proximally to the heart can help prevent pooling of blood against the valves, expediting return blood flow and circulation.
○ Lymphatic Drainage. Massaging can assist the flow of lymph through the lymphatics.
● Connective Tissue is adaptive and responsive to a variety of influences such as injury. Healing may product more than optimal connective tissues which can be reduced by massage.
● Neuromuscular effects is the interaction of between control of muscles by the nervous system and the response of the muscle to nerve signals. Neuromuscular massage is intended to ‘reset’ muscle resting length through lengthening and stretching muscles and connective tissue.
