The term Ayurveda means “Science of Life” (Ayush means life and veda means science). Ayurveda is one of the oldest natural health care systems originated 5000 years back in India. Ayurveda deals with the various principles and therapeutic panchakarma procedures which are essential for the constant maintenance of health throughout the life span as well as to combat the suffering in a comprehensive way. The preventive and curative aspects of Ayurveda includes principles of positive health and wide range of therapeutic measures to attain physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing which is almost similar to the WHO’s concept of health in this modern era. Ayurveda with its understanding of life and consciousness becomes the medicine of the future.

Concept of Ayurveda

The concept of Ayurveda is not just a medical treatment or diagnosis of a diseased condition but much more than that. Ayurveda is having a set of practical, simple guidelines for long life and good health, with the regular practice of these guiding principles you can bring your body and mind to perfect balance. According to Ayurveda the human body is composed of four basic fundamentals Dosha(Three humors), Dhathu( seven basic tissues), Mala (Waste products of metabolism) and Agni (Digestive fire). One who is having equilibrium of Dosha (Vata, pitta and Kapha),Agni (digestive fire or metabolic activity), Dhatu (Seven basic tissues), Mala (waste products) and pleasant Atma (consciousness) , Indriya( Sense organs) and Manas ( Mind) is considered to be a healthy person. Disturbances of this equilibrium causes diseases. The three vital principles of Doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which together regulate and control the catabolic and anabolic metabolism. The main function of these three Doshas is to carry the byproduct of digestive food throughout the body, which helps in nourishing up the body tissues. Any malfunction in these Doshas causes disease.

Panchakarma (Purification/Detoxification therapies)

Panchakarma is Ayurveda’s primary purification and detoxification treatment. Panchakarma means five therapies which are used to clean the body of toxic materials left by disease and poor nutrition. The five treatments are Therapeutic vomiting ( Vamana), Purgation therapy (Virechena), Medicated Enema (Basti), Nasal administration (Nasya karma) and Bloodletting (Raktha mokshanam). Ayurvedic unique five procedures are intended to intensively cleanse and restore balance to the body, mind and emotions.
Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word that means "five actions" or "five treatments". Pancha Karma is the process which gets to the root cause of the problem and corrects the essential balance of 'Tridosha' in body. Pancha Karma is not only good for alleviating disease but is also a useful tool in maintaining excellent health. Ayurveda advises undergoing PanchaKarma at the seasonal changes to clean the body, improve the digestion and to improve the metabolic process. The five purification procedures that mentioned by Charaka are Vamana (medicated vomiting), virechana (medicated purgation), niruha/ asthapana (decoction enema) , anuvasana (oil enema) and sirovirechana/nasaya (Medicated errhine). Main benefits of panchakarma includes digestive fire increases, diseases are alleviated, health restored and maintained, all sense organs function properly, mind and intellect work properly, colour of the skin improves, strength increases, person becomes capable of getting good progeny, sexual power increases, ageing process is delayed and the person enjoys disease free healthy life. Every individual requires purification from time to time. Due to the effect of time, imbalance in sense organs, bad food habits and other reasons like hybrid foods, frozen foods etc. are responsible for accumulation of toxin waste products in the body. If the body is purified properly, then the rejuvenation procedures get boosting and boy gains strength and immunity. Hence panchakarma therapy is considered important for every individual. Each individual should carry out proper purification procedures for maintaining his health. Health is defined as equilibrium of bio humors, normal functioning of all seven tissues, balanced agni digestive fire, efficient elimination of waste products, normal functioning of five sense organs and harmony among body, mind and soul.

Vamana (Medicated vomiting)

In this procedure excess and vitiated doshas are removed from the upper part fo the body by way of vomiting. Vomitting is induced with herbal emetic substances for the purpose of eliminating vitiated Kapha and Pitta.

Virechana( Medicated purgation)

Downward elimination of vitiated doshas or waste products is known as virechana. To eliminate pitta, virechana is the best treatment. The aim of this treatment is to stimulate vitiated doshas from the stomach, small intestine, liver and gall bladder, and bring them to the gastro- intestinal tract for their eventual expulsion from the body through rectum.

Vasti/ Basti (Medicated enema)

Basti is main treatment for Vata disorders. However, it is useful in diseases of pitta and kapha as well as for vitiation of all doshas together and the vitiation of blood also. Basti (Medicated enema) can be given with many different combinations of herbs and other substances like oil, milk, honey, salt, meat, broth, herbal paste, etc.
• Niruha or Asthapan vasti
This is also called as decoction or cleansing enema. (The word ‘niruha’ means “ that whose benefit is great”
• Anuvasana or Sneha Vasti
The word Anuvasana means that which remains inside the body for a long time without causing harm”. It type of vasti mainly contains oil.

Nasya Karma (Nasal Medication)

Nasya is the procedure in which medications are administered through the nostril in order to purify the head and neck region. Regular use of nasyakarma can prevent the diseases of ear, nose, throat and head. Especially it is very effective for treating hair fall and graying of hair. Nasya controls all doshas in the region of head as well as all centers of sense organs and motor organs situated in the head, hence it is useful in the treatment of various disorders like headache, migraine, facial paralysis, hemiplegia and aphasia.

AYURVEDIC MASSAGE (Abhyangam)

Ayurvedic massage has long history as part of Ayurvedic treatments. It is unique in the sense that it is the only system of massage which is done according to the theory of primordial elements and bio- humors and is done as per the particular constitution of the patient for balancing the life energies. With massage the circulation of the blood and plasma is increased, it can stimulate and strengthen the lymphatic system, remove internal waste products and can open the flow of prana or life forces in the body.
Traditionally, message according to Ayurveda, includes sneha (oil) that provide specific benefits for vata, pitta and kapha. Appropriate oil should be selected with an understanding of the doshas. Before doing massage one must know his constitution, Vata prakrithi people need oil massage daily, for pitta prakruti people massage with correctly applied oil will enhance the natural luster of their skin, nourish their muscles, and calm their reactive nervous system. Kapha people need massage to improve their circulation and lymph drainage. Their skin and flesh are strong and thick. Hence they need deep tissue penetrating massage.

Rejuvenation therapies

There are many rejuvenation treatments or supplementary panchakarma procedures which are practiced in different indications are mentioned in Ayurveda. They are useful to deal either with the whole body or some parts of the body. They are useful in health and in disease. The style, herbs and duration of the procedure will changes according to the necessity.

Shirodhara

Pouring of sneha on forehead region from a vessel(Dhara patra) hanging overhead is called as shirodhara. It allows the furthermost corners of your mind and body to release and relax, as a fine stream of warm sesame oil is poured over the centre of the fore head. Shirodhara is a unique treatment where specific medicated warm oil / herbal decoctions / medicated milk / buttermilk are used to bathe the head in a regular stream for a definite period. It is an effective therapy for mental relaxation and cures insomnia, stress, depression, decreased mental agility etc.

Sarvanga dhara

This is done both on the head and all over the body and the process of doing it on the head is the same as that for sirodhara. Two persons sit on either side of the Pathi/table pour the liquid over the body using tumblers. When oily medicines are used for the body below the neck, it gives almost the same results as shirodhara.

Shirovasti

This is one of the important external oleation methods. It consists of medicated oil retention over the head. This is done with the help of specially designed elongated leather cap. Especially it is indicated in facial palsy, insomnia, dry nose, dryness of the eye, migraine, headache, memory loss, mental stress and strain. Shirovasti has an added benefit of rejuvenating the whole body, relieving the exhaustion and restoring the luster of the skin.

Kati vasti

Ayurveda has described some nutritive, palliative types of procedures among them kativasti is important procedure. It means retaining oil over the lower back with the help of container prepared of either black gram or wheat dough. This form of external vasti particularly benefits muscle spasm and rigidity of the lower spine and strengthens the bone tissues in that area.

Hridaya vasti

If oil is retained over the area of heart on the chest, it is called as hridaya vasti. The procedure is same as that of kativasti. Only site is different. It reduces the pain in the sternum area and strengthens the heart.

Pizichill

Pizi means squeezing and chil means vigorous synchronized movements. Large quantity of oil is poured over the body while massaging it vigorously with a bolus of rice wrapped in a cloth. It is a great experience to undergo this type of treatment. This stimulates the marma points and creates harmony between doshas. It eliminates toxins from the joints and other muscular parts.

Podikidi pinda sweda

It is the herbal powder poultice fomentation. Dry herbal powders are roasted in castor oil. Two or four expert massaures do this procedure simultaneously all over the body. Duration of this procedure is from 40 to 60 minutes.

Navarakizi pinda sweda/Shasti shali pinda sweda.

This is most unctuous type of sneha and swedana combination. A special brown shasti type of rice is cooked in decoction of ten roots or roots of castor and prepared in to five poultices. Which are useful for continuous use. It is highly beneficial for treatment of poliomyletis, facial palsy, hemiplegia and other degenerative muscular diseases such as multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy.
