What can an Osteopath treat?

Osteopathy can help you and your family with musculoskeletal problems such as:
• sports injuries
• back pain
• sciatica
• knee pain
• neck/ shoulder pain
• headaches
• carpel tunnel
• women’s health such as menstrual related pain
• arthritis related pain
• repetitive strain injuries
• postural problems
• tennis/ golfers elbow
• pregnancy related pain such as low back pain, headaches/ neck pain, sciatica, carpel tunnel, indigestion and breathlessness.

What is Osteopathy?

An Osteopath works on your muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nervous system with the aim of achieving optimal structure and function. Treatment techniques such as massage, joint manipulation and gentle stretching are used to increase movement in the joints and relax the surrounding tissues. If required, a stretching and strengthening program may be prescribed to further correct your posture. This will improve the dysfunction now and assist preventing it from returning in the future.

Osteopathy has several principals through which Osteopaths approach the treatment of their patients.

the body is a unit. This means one part of the body cannot be separated from another and therefore treated as a whole. This is also known as being holistic. For example, hip pain may originate in the hip or may be resulting from compensation for knee, ankle or back problems.

the body has a self healing capacity. Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal themselves. Osteopathy gives the body a helping hand by assisting it to heal itself faster and to maintain that healing longer.

structure and function are interrelated. This means that the body functions best if the structure is optimal. Through ‘hands on’ treatment and postural changes, Osteopathy supports achieving optimal health and balance.

So what actually happens when I come in for treatment?

When you come in for your first treatment, Alison will take a history of your current symptoms and previous medical details. An assessment is made how your joints are moving and how your muscles and other tissues feel. The third part of the session involves the treatment, which can include massage, gentle but specific movements of the joints and manipulation. The final step in your treatment is management. This may involve ice, heat, stretches and/or a strengthening program to alleviate your symptoms now and maintain optimal health in the long term.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you don’t need a formal referral from your Doctor though this does happen sometimes. Alison is happy to work in conjunction with your doctor or other medical professional to achieve the best outcome for you.

Can I claim treatment on my private health insurance?

Yes, but only if you have extras cover. Some insurers have Osteopathy included in their standard extras policy and others include it in a higher extras category. The refund from the insurer also varies so best to directly contact your insurer or check your policy.

What happens if I had the injury at work or as the result of a motor vehicle accident?

Alison is registered with both TAC and Workcover and is able to assist you with your recovery from these injuries.

How long will I need treatment for?

Osteopathic treatment is solely based on each patient’s individual needs. In general, acute conditions may require 2-4 treatments. Chronic or long term conditions may require more treatments initially and then maintenance treatment every couple of months. This is determined by your body’s individual response to treatment and ongoing needs.

How much will treatment cost?

Follow up consultation: $60.00
You may be eligable for a rebate from you private health insurance
