What is the history of Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a "whole body" system of manual therapy, based on unique biomechanical principles, which uses a wide range of techniques to treat musculo-skeletal problems and other functional disorders of the body. It was developed in America in the 1870s by a Missouri Doctor, Andrew Taylor Still, and has developed to the point where it is now widely recognized throughout the world as one of the most scientifically validated and effective "complementary" therapies.
What training does an Osteopath have?
Osteopaths undergo 5 years full time university training. The training consists of either a 3 year degree in Clinical Science followed by a 2 year Masters in Health Science, or a double degree in Applied Science and Osteopathic Science. All Osteopaths are registered with the State Registration Board and are members of the Australian Osteopathic Association..
Do I need a referral from a GP?
No, simply make an appointment with your osteopath directly. Like going to the dentist, you do not need a referral from your GP, however increasingly GP's are referring patients to osteopaths. Osteopathy is a complementary form of treatment and works well when used in conjunction with medical treatment.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by my private health fund?
Like dental work, osteopathic treatment is covered under the ancillary or extras cover of major health insurers. We offer instant rebates via HICAPS. The rebate varies depending on your health insurer, so check the details of your policy.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by Medicare?
Yes, Medicare now covers osteopathic treatment in certain conditions. In the instance that you suffer from chronic pain, your GP can refer you to an osteopath for up to five free treatments each year. You must have a referral from your GP, so talk to them about an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by Work Cover
Yes, the cost of osteopathic treatment is covered. If you already have a claim number, please bring it with you. Otherwise, let your GP know that you want to consult one of our osteopaths. We can also help you arrange the necessary approval.
How many treatments will I need?
Your osteopath will expect to see positive results within 2-4 treatments for common symptoms. However, it must be emphasised that each individual is unique therefore some people will require more or less treatment before their symptoms improve.
How effective is osteopathic treatment?
Government and medical studies over recent years have consistently shown osteopathy to be less expensive, use fewer drugs and have higher patient satisfaction than conventional medical care for back, neck and other musculo-skeletal pain.
What types of conditions do Osteopaths Treat?
Osteopaths can diagnose, treat and prevent many conditions, like -
Back, neck and shoulder pain
Nerve problems like sciatica
Headache, migraine and TMJ
Muscle strains and spasms
Hip, knee, jaw, elbow, wrist and ankle pain
Joint injuries and arthritis

Pre and Post Natal Care

Work-related and repetitive strain injuries (RSI)

What can I expect to experience in an Osteopathic treatment?
Osteopathic treatment aims to restore the normal equilibrium of the body that typifies good health. And we do not use one technique as a cure all. Your osteopath will select an appropriate treatment approach from a wide range of options based on their analysis of your condition. These will include -
Soft tissue massage & trigger point therapy
Joint mobilisation, articulation & manipulation
Muscle energy technique & counter strain
Cranial Osteopathy & Functional technique
Myo-fasciael release & PNF stretching
The background of Dr Patrick Kuhn Osteopath.
Dr Patrick Kuhn is originally from far North Queensland and has spent the past 19 years in Melbourne. He initially moved to Melbourne to study dance at the Victorian College of the arts. However his dance career was cut short after sustaining a broken leg. Dr Kuhn then moved on to complete a diploma in Shiatsu and Chinese medicine which then led to his interest in hands on health. After experiencing the benefits of osteopathy and wanting to further his knowledge he enrolled in the five year Osteopathic course at RMIT University Melbourne.
On completion of his Osteopathic studies Dr Kuhn established his own practice Alignment Osteopathy and Pilates in the bay side area of Hampton in Melbourne. In conjunction with the Osteopathic treatment Dr Kuhn also provided personalized Pilates sessions in his fully equipped Pilates studio. The clinic grew to include two osteopaths and three Pilates instructors and focused on spinal injury rehabilitation and pre and post natal care.
Professionally Dr Kuhn has completed a number of post graduate courses and presented a number of seminars to various special interest groups and professional bodies. Dr Kuhn has a keen interest in pre and post natal care and the treatment of infants and children which formed a significant part of his Melbourne practice.
In late 2007 Dr Kuhn sold his Osteopathic practice in Melbourne and relocated to the sunshine coast with his family. I am excited at the opportunity to come and practice in such a beautiful part of Australia and am looking forward to providing the best possible osteopathic care I can to the local community.
