Remedial Massage – What are the Benefits?

Muscle Tension and Massage
Muscles automatically contract around any painful site to support and protect the area. If pain is treated quickly, muscles relax. If pain persists, muscles can become habitually contracted. Sometimes contractions press on nerves causing tingling, numbness, and increased pain.

Tight muscles reduce circulation, allowing waste products (toxins) from inflammation and from normal muscle function to accumulate. This can leave you feeling fatigued and sore. It can also irritate nerves increasing pain throughout the tense area.

As massage relaxes the nervous system, blood vessels dilate to increase blood flow, and waste products are flushed away and replaced with healing oxygen and nutrients. Massage also acts on the nervous system to counteract the stress response, relaxing muscle tension and allowing heart rate, blood pressure and circulation to return to normal.

Massage and Exercise
When exercise leaves your muscles feeling fatigued, stiff and sore, massage can help. Massage stretches and lengthens shortened muscles and reduces spasm. Because massage helps your muscles return to normal function, it can help you resume activity sooner, enhance your performance, and help your muscles work more efficiently.

Many sports and fitness enthusiasts rely on regular massage as an important part of their health maintenance routine. This is because an area of constant tension can impair performance and even lead to injury when stressed. Assisted stretching, kneading and other massage techniques can loosen areas of chronic tension and help relieve new areas of tension before they become a problem.

Massage and Injury
If injured your body often repairs itself with scar tissue consisting of tightly matted collagen fibres. These fibres tear and re-tear easily, making healing difficult and causing your movements to be painful or restricted. Massage can limit scar tissue formation in new injuries and can reduce, or make more flexible, the scar tissue around old injuries. Your muscles will move freely and with less pain.

Other Treatments Available

Indian Seated Massage
This is a modern adaptation of an ancient Indian massage technique, and is completed with the client fully clothed. This massage includes the shoulders, arms, neck, face and scalp. This helps relieve headaches, eyestrain and neck pain caused by stress and tension stored in the neck and shoulders.

Reflexology
Reflexology is based on the principle that congestion or tension in any part of the foot corresponds with congestion or tension in the corresponding parts of the body. This treatment can be safely used when it is not convenient to treat other parts of the body. Reflexology can be a relaxing therapy that works on many levels, soothing, calming, balancing and boosting the entire body.

Lymphatic Drainage
A gentle, rhythmic style of massage that mimics the action of the lymphatic system using precise rhythm and pressure, to relax the nervous system and aid the body’s immune system. It is recommended for those prone to and recovering from sore throats, colds, infections, ongoing tiredness, excess fluids, low immunity, swollen nodes and also for the physically inactive.

Cupping
Cupping is a method of applying a partial vacuum, created in glass cups which are placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. Cupping has also been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues, causing tissues to release toxins, activate the lymphatic system, help activate and clear the veins, arteries and capillaries, activate the skin, and improve stretch marks. Cupping is one of the best deep tissue massages available.

Ear Candling
Ear candling uses specially made hollow candles which are held gently on the edge of the ear to create a vacuum in the ear, drawing out old wax, and foreign bodies from within the ear canal and sinuses. Ear candling stimulates the immune system and peripheral blood circulation. It is effective in treating pre & post air travel ear ‘popping’, sinusitis, hay fever, allergies, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), excess wax or fluid in the ears. Ear candling is safe and pain free. It is also a great method of quick relaxation as many people find the warmth, sounds and sensations relaxing.
