Agama Yoga Centre is a sanctuary in the midst of the inner south-eastern suburb of Middle Park in Melbourne, Australia. The centre is open seven days a week.
The principal teacher, Barbara Brian, is a student of TKV Desikachar and is the founder of Agama Yoga Centre, establishing the teachings of T Krishnamacharya in Melbourne.
Barbara has been teaching yoga for 18 years, offering yoga classes for the young and healthy, those with specific needs recovering from injury or illness and preparation for parenthood. Yoga for all stages of life. She has developed a comprehensive program of both group and private classes where individual needs and abilities are respected. Barbara conducts interstate and international workshops sharing these teachings and a comprehensive teacher training course.
As well as a full timetable of general classes, Barbara and her teachers specialize in providing individual tuition and in designing personalized yoga programs that can be done at home. These home programs are designed to meet individual needs and range from supportive, therapeutic programs to challenging and strengthening practices.
Agama Yoga Centre is dedicated to the teachings of Krishnamacharya. As a teacher his principle was, “Teach what is inside you, not as it applies to you, to yourself, but as it applies to the other” He strongly believed that yoga should be adapted to the individual, never the individual to yoga. This is the foundation of our work at Agama Yoga Centre.
TKV Desikachar was a student of his father, T.Krishnamacharya, for three decades, during which time he was immersed in the practice and application of all the tools of Yoga. His study also included Vedanta philosophy and Ayurveda. He is the tradition bearer of these teachings, traveling internationally to present the many benefits of yoga and has authored many books including the very popular “The Heart of Yoga” and “Health, Healing and Beyond”. TKV Desikachar and his family of teachers are teaching in Melbourne in May 2005.
In 1976 TKV Desikachar founded a non-profit Yoga Centre, the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram to share and propagate the teachings of his father and teacher. Known as the KYM, it is now internationally regarded as a most respected Yoga Centre. People from all over the world come to learn and practice the different aspects of yoga. Many people see the KYM as their “yoga home”
Kausthub Desikachar receives these teachings from his father TKV Desikachar, and is now an internationally recognized yoga teacher, therapist and author of several books. The most recent book, “The Yoga of the Yogi – The Legacy of T. Krishnamacharya”. Kausthub is an important source teacher who teaches regularly at our Centre. Kausthub is known as a teacher steeped in tradition, yet able to present the teachings in a contemporary manner.
