Welcome to Luna Yoga Studio
Vivienne O'Brien and Peter Ayliffe opened the studio in 2000. We teach Iyengar yoga which was developed by yoga master BKS Iyengar. His focus is on precision, alignment and safety in each pose to build strength, flexibility, stamina and balance.
Luna Yoga Studio is a fully equipped space that offers an intimate and supportive environment to begin or further your yoga practice. It is a comfortable studio, warm in winter and cool in summer with a light and fresh atmosphere.

Classes
Getting Started
The ideal way to start yoga is with a beginners course. It is a 90 minute class once a week for 9 weeks. You need to book as each course has a limit of 20 students. Wear comfortable clothing, we practice in bare feet. Yoga is easier practiced with an empty stomach, allow 3 hours after a heavy meal or an hour after a light snack. Before class please inform your teacher if you have any physical restrictions, medical conditions or you are pregnant.
Class Levels
Beginner
All ages and fitness levels are welcome. You do not have to have a certain level of fitness or flexibility to join as the class is designed for beginners. 90mins
Beginner 2
Consolidates poses taught in beginners especially shoulder stand. 90 mins
General Level
An early morning class for students who have some experience and wish to expand their yoga practice.
Level 1
A wide range of postures are introduced e.g. Headstand. 90 mins
Level 2
A challenging two hour class for students wishing to deepen their yoga practice. Headstand and shoulder stand variations are taught.
Led Practice
In this two hour class the teacher leads and the Level 1 & 2 students follow.
Rejuvenating
The rejuvenating class is restorative yoga. It is designed for students new to yoga and experienced practitioners. The poses are modified with the use of props so yoga is practice without strain. In comfortable positions the props help to stretch and relax your body especially beneficial in times when you feel weak, fatigued or recovering from illness or injury. Duration 90 mins.
Mother & Baby
These classes are specifically designed for new mums and provide an opportunity to nurture your body and mind and to connect to your baby in a warm and friendly enviroment.
Private
Personal yoga instruction by appointment. Duration 60 minutes.
Yearly Timetable
The Luna Yoga Studio year is divided into five nine week terms. There is a week break between each term and a three week break over the Christmas period. During term breaks Early Morning Intensives and Workshops are held.
Each course runs for a term and is designed to progressively introduce participants to a series of poses that will prepare them to move onto the next level.
To accommodate your busy and changing schedule students are welcome to make up missed classes at other times in that week, or to do two classes the following week.
Teachers
The teachers at Luna Yoga Studio are certified Iyengar yoga teachers. Our personal yoga practice is on going including workshops and continuing accreditation appraisals.
Vivienne O'Brien
Vivienne's passion for Yoga began over sixteen years ago. She qualified as an accredited Iyengar yoga teacher in 1998.
Peter Ayliffe
Peter's dedicated yoga practice has extended over the last sixteen years. He gained his Iyengar Yoga teacher accreditation in 2002.
Lynn Holt
Lynn has been practicing yoga for twenty years and has been committed to Iyengar Yoga for the last thirteen years. She completed her Iyengar teacher training in 2007.
Patrick Costello
Patrick is a certified Iyengar teacher who has been practicing for 14 years and teaching since 2001. He is also a Naturopath and Remedial Massage Therapist.
Clare Pritchard
Clare is a certified Iyengar teacher and has been practicing yoga since 1995. She also holds a Level 1 & 2 Certificate in the Radiant Child Yoga Program.
Prenatal
Prenatal yoga promotes a healthy pregnancy and is ideal preparation for giving birth. It links the yoga postures and the breathing exercises to create awareness of your own mind, body and spirit and the spirit of your baby.
The emphasis of the prenatal class is to create space for the baby to grow and to maintain the mother’s total health. The poses strengthen the uterus and pelvic muscles, improve circulation, aid digestion, exercise the spinal column, relieve fatigue and tension and revitalize the internal organs. They can also alleviate many of the common discomforts of pregnancy such as nausea, constipation, varicose veins, swollen ankles, back pain and sciatica.
Breathing practice during pregnancy opens the chest and helps to improve circulation in both mother and baby, ensuring a better supply of oxygen to the blood. It also calms the nerves and gives the mother greater control of her breathing during labor.
The prenatal class offers a unique place to connect with other women. Sharing the experience of pregnancy builds a sense of community in a supportive environment. Feelings of anxiety and fear that can go hand in hand with pregnancy dissipates with the soothing effect of the yoga practice, working with postures and breathing the muscles release, joints open, internal organs are toned and the mind settles leaving you feeling freer and lighter.
Classes
The class is ongoing; you can join in any time during a Luna Yoga term. No previous yoga experience is necessary. If you have any injuries, complications, conditions, history of miscarriage or doubts you must discuss them with your obstetrician prior to class.
Note:
- Yoga is practised through to delivery except in weeks 10 to 12.
- Do not strain, force or hold your breathe
- Avoid jumping between postures
- Keep the abdomen soft
- Do not bend or extend beyond your capacity
- During class inform your teacher if you have any discomfort

Workshops
Luna Yoga conducts specialised weekend workshops that provide an opportunity for students to extend their skills in an enjoyable and refreshing environment.
Early Morning Intensives are run on week days from 6.00 - 8.00am during term breaks. They are suitable for Level 1 and Level 2 students and for Beginner 2 students moving to Level 1 in the next term.
Bali Retreat

From Sunday 19 to Friday 24 October at the Kumara Sakti, in Ubud, Bali
The ten bedroom holistic retreat is located 1.5km from the heart of Ubud in Bali. Bordered to the west by a small creek the eco-friendly retreat is surrounded by jungle and rice fields. The centre offers: 2 swimming pools, dining room, spa and spacious yoga studio open to nature. Each room is air-conditioned, has its own terrace with garden views, mini-bar, bath and shower, comfortable yet unpretentious. Meals are well balanced to nourish both body and soul: vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Meditation
Murray’s practical approach to meditation offers tools and techniques for every day living. The meditation class is interactive and uses exercises that give students a direct experience of meditation and relaxation.
The meditation practices are drawn from various traditions: Hinduism, Buddhism Zen and Taoism and presented in a contemporary, western perspective to make the art and science of meditation accessible for the average person.
In the class feedback is encouraged for life experience and situations to be shared. Gently and simply students increase awareness in their inner and outer world.
Murray Hirst
With almost 20 years of experience, Murray has an extensive background in meditation. Before returning to Melbourne he was the director of “The Sanctuary Holistic Retreat Centre” a health and meditation retreat located new Byron Bay.
Murray has personally facilitated hundreds of meditators in their practice and run retreat programs through the “Synchronicity Foundation” a non-profit foundation that promotes meditation and conscious living throughout the world. He also has a Graduate Diploma in Counselling from Swinburne University.
