Diagnosis and treatment
Practioners seek information from the patient in a number of ways: examining the colour of the face and tongue, asking a range of questions, listening to the patient’s voice, and checking the body and the pulse in order to make a diagnosis.
The practioner then prescribes a formula of 10-15 individual herbs, selecting from over 800. This formula, taken either in raw form in a ‘decoction’- a tea extracted from boiling herbs in water, or in powder or pill form, is adjusted specifically to treat the disease symptoms and promote the patient’s overall health.
Treatments
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a completely natural therapy which has been used since ancient times. Even before steel was invented, therapists used bone, stone, or copper to treat illness and balance the body’s Qi and blood without side effects.
Acupuncture is especially suitable for treating pain and nervous system problems.
sterile single-use disposable needles are used for each acupuncture patient.
Fine hair-like needles are inserted to stimulate specific points in the body for about 15-30 minutes, depending on the condition. This process is quite painless and administered in a caring professional manner.
Electronic stimulation can also be applied as an adjunct to reduce pain symptoms.
Moxa, a Chinese herb, can be used on specific acupuncture points to warm the internal organs for those with weak or cold conditions such as paralysis or arthritis.
Herbs
Chinese herbs have been used in everyday life and medical treatment for thousands of years. Over one thousand herbs have been collected, classified and used to treat illness.
Chinese herbal formulas provide an organic, natural treatment in raw, powered or capsule form. Herbs are carefully selected by the practitioner in creating a formula to balance one another thus reducing or eliminating any side effects.
Herbal medicine in most circumstances can be used alongside western prescriptions to treat and support the patient’s recovery. Just because herbs are natural does not mean they are ineffective or weak. They can be very effective in treating a wide range of acute and chronic diseases.
The herbal forumula provides a hoilistic support- treating all of the presenting symptoms at the same time. The prescribed content and dosage will often chance as the condition changes and improves. For example for someone suffering chronic cough and weak digestion, some of the herbs will be to clear the lungs and some will be to improve the digestive system, and some to build up the immune system.
Massage
Chinese massage or Tui Na is based on the meridian and acupuncture point system theory. The practioner uses a range of techniques- rolling, rubbing, pressing or patting with fingers, elbow and palms to strengthen energy and unblock stagnation. This unique technique is not only useful for treating muscular problems, it can also be helpful for those with internal conditions. For example, in treating those with indigestion, stomach and large intestine points may be used in the massage treatment. Tui Na is equivalent to acupuncture treatment, but without any pain.
Massage is particularly good for those with:
Muscular problems, neck, shoulder, back pain
Stress, depression, anxiety, unhappiness, moodiness
Chronic headaches, migraines
Digestion problems bloating, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome
Immune system problems
Reflexology
Reflexology is a foot massage technique which stimulates points on the feet to help heal the whole person. Finger pressure can be combined with a herbal bath using a formula of individual herbs to treat the prevailing condition.
Reflexology is especially good for:
Nervous system conditions
Worry
Stress
Insomnia
Reproductive problems
Infertility
Hormone imbalance
Prostate inflammation
Problems with sexual energy
Cupping
Cupping is a therapeutic technique that uses small glass cups to create suction on the skin’s surface. This suction provides a sense of release and relief without pain.
This technique is widely used in the colder weather and can effectively relieve symptoms of cold and pain.
Cupping is especially good for:
Arthritis
Common cold
Stress
Bloating
Spooning (Gua Sha)
This technique uses a Chinese ceramic spoon with a special herbal oil to rub on the skin’s surface, following the acupuncture points and the meridians, based on the practioner’s diagnoses of condition of the body.
Spooning is especially good for:
Illnesses with a fever (hot conditions)
Anxiety
Hyperactivity
Stagnation of the blood circulation
Back and muscle pain
Clearing toxins from the body
