REIKI
"All disease is due to inhibited soul life. The art of the healer consists in releasing the soul so that its life can flow through the form" - Alice Bailey

Reiki is a gentle healing technique that promotes healing on all levels of being, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and brings them into balance.
Rei means 'Universal Spirit' or 'Essence' + 'Ki' means Life Energy-Chi in China or Prana in India. Life Force Energy is intrinsic to all life (human beings, animals and plants). This energy flows through every living thing and allows flowers to bloom and human beings to grow.
Reiki channels universal life force energy through the hands of the Reiki practitioner to the receiver.
The beauty of Reiki lies in its simplicity and yet its effects are far reaching.
Reiki is safe to use along with conventional medical treatment.

Beneficial Effects of Reiki

• accelerates the body's own healing processes and allows the individual to heal themselves
• balances energies in body
• enhances personal awareness and improves meditative states
• promotes feelings of inner peace
• treats the cause and not just the symptoms of disease
• relaxes and reduces stress
As the energy is activated the brain wave pattern slows down to 8-10 hertz range as in meditation
• works on the subconscious level and removes emotional blockages

Reiki plays a pivotal role in reducing stress in one's daily life. The inextricable connection between the mind and body is well documented. The field of psychoneuroimmunology reinforces that stress contributes to physical diseases such as cancer, heart disease, harmonal imbalances and skin disorders (i.e psoriasis + eczema). Reiki is more than a gentle healing modality but a philosophy of life. The Reiki principles are based on compassion and unconditional love.

Allow the gentle flowing energy of Reiki to soothe your mind and caress your spirit

AYURVEDA
Ayurveda is a truly holistic and integral medical system that treats human beings as a 'whole' which is a combination of body, mind and soul.

"AYU" means all aspects of life from conception to death and "VEDA" means knowledge of learning. It is a way of life that describes the diet, medicine and behaviour that are beneficial or detrimental for your life or lifestyle.

Ayurveda is one of the oldest (approximately 6000 years old) scientific medical systems in the world, with a long record of clinical experience. It is one of the great gifts of the Gods of ancient India to mankind. It is not just a system of medicine in the common sense of curing disease. It is also a way of life which teaches us how to maintain and protect our health. According to the four main vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama, Atharva), they stated that when the God Brahma created the universe with human life, human beings started to feel sick, not doing all Karmas properly as they were supposed to. So the creator of the universe, Brahma wrote Ayurveda which some people call as a fifth veda.
The Rig veda is the foundation stone of the other vedas, being the oldest of the four and contains concepts of Ayurveda. Its three great Goda - Indra, Agni and Soma - related to the three doshas (body type) of Ayurveda - Vata, Pitta or Kapha.

In Atharva we find references to anatomical and physiological factors, the disease process, treatment of specific diseases and other systematic knowledge about Ayurveda. All the material about the science of life is compiled together in the so called fifth veda, Ayurveda and all those compilations are called "Samhitas". Due to invasion of different cultures in ancient India, many of these Samhitas have been lost or burnt, but three main Samhitas are available: Charaka-Medicine Veda; Sushruta-Surgery Veda; Ashtanga Hridaya-Lifestyle Management.
Ayurveda is not only medicine but is also a way of life.

How to determine your constitution

Select one of the three options below to determine which description fits you best. Make a note to which type your choice belongs. If you feel two or all options fit, jot down each type. If you are unsure about a choice, just leave it. Tally up how many times each type has been chosen. As each person is a combination of all three types, you are likely to have numbers for all three. The type with the highest number is your dominant constitutional type.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine which originated in China over 5000 years ago. Over the past few decades, this science and art of healing has become widely accepted all over the world.
Acupuncture works very well especially when combined with Ayurveda.

Acupuncture is a form of natural healing which has the following major benefits -
• treats the root cause as well as the symptoms
• is a preventative method against disease
• drug / chemical free and pain relieving
• holistic way of treating body, balancing physical and spiritual (emotional) aspects of body
• effectively treats all acute to chronic conditions / symptoms

How can Acupuncture help you?

Acupuncture therapy can help :-
- by treating specific, acute or chronic disorders to provide relief of symptoms with no side effects or complications
- as a preventative medicine it has the ability to detect and treat energy imbalances before they progress into serious diseases
- help maintenance treatment of a long term problem by providing a more comfortable state of health and reduce the need for medication and surgery

Now you ask, how does it work?

Each person has an energy (Qi) circulation. We cannot see it but without energy our finger would stop working. A simple example, without electricity, wiring cannot produce current to switch on the light. This also applies to the body. Food generates energy, the energy (Qi) circulates in the body with the help of meridians (electrical circuit). Like any electrical circuit, it must be kept in good working order if it is to function effectively. If the human circuit breaks down, the result is disease (dis-ease).
To maintain good health, it is essential for the body's energy (Qi) to circulate in a continuous and unblocked manner. The pathways (meridians) carry energy (Qi) flowing smoothly from one end to the other end of the body. Ancient Chinese Medicine have all the descriptions of those meridians. Modern technological methods such as electronic, thermal reading and kirlian photography are now being used to detect these meridians.
There are over five hundred energy points, i.e. acupuncture points all over the body along the meridians. Acupuncture needles stimulate these points, the quality and quantity of energy (Qi) can be balanced to maintain good health.

How often do I need treatments?

According to Ayurveda, Naturopathy & Traditional Chinese Medicine, the human body is a complex blend of body, mind and emotion.
During the first visit, the acupuncturist checks all aspects of your health, detail of your medical, surgical and family history and all other relevant information such as exercise, habits and occupation which are collated.
A general physical examination helps in finding the status of all the vital body organs.
Tongue and pulse examination give an even broader picture of all the vital organs' status which leads to an overall assessment of your current disorder and gives an overview for any underlying cause for the current situation. That examination will give the acupuncturist, a general idea of how many treatments are required.

What to expect after treatment?

Generally, the first response you will notice is a change in overall health, good sleep, more energy and motivation to do things in a normal day will improve. Digestion will be better. There are always variations in results, especially in pain, some people respond quickly to treatment while others show a slow but gradual improvement.

What does Acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organisation (Dec 1979) recognises a number of disorders that have been successfully treated by Acupuncture. These are emphasised in bold print in the following list which also includes other common disorders that respond well to acupuncture.
Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of a wide range of common and not so common health conditions.

Some conditions suitable for treatment with acupuncture include:

painful conditions like headaches, migraine, osteoarthritis, renal colic, biliary colic, post-operative pain, dental analgesia
muscoloskeletal conditions like sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia, peripheral neuropathy, stroke sequelae, Bell's palsy
gynaecological problems like painful menstruation, irregular periods, premenstrual syndrome, menopausal syndrome
pregnancy and labour like infertility, morning sickness, labour pain, induction of labour, long labour
ear, nose and throat disorders like sinusitis, rhinitis, tonsilitis, sore throat, mouth ulcers, tinnitus, Meniere's disease
urogenital disorders like prostatitis, impotence, retained urine, urinary tract infection
cardiovascular disorders like primary hypotension, high blood pressure, angina pectoris
addictions like smoking and drug withdrawals
other common cold and influenza, cough, allergies and immunity, gout, anxiety, stress, insomnia & fatigue, skin disorders...to name a few.

Techniques

Professional Acupuncturist Dr.Mahesh often incorporates the use of other related techniques into the overall treatment such as acupressure, moxibustion, spooning (Gua Sha), cupping, seven star hammer and liniments.

Moxibustion - This method involves the burning of Moxa - an ancient Chinese herb, which is a bit similar to mugwort - in the form of a burning stick and is held close to the Acupuncture Meridian points on the surface of the skin to basically move the stagnant Qi and blood in different conditions especially muscoloskeletal ailments.

Spooning(Gua-Sha) - A spoonlike round edged instrument is applied for pain over the acupuncture meridians along their pathways. The pain or condition caused by external factors such as wind or cold which have obstructed the flow of blood in the surface tissues and muscles.

Liniments - Acupuncturist Dr.Mahesh uses a specific type of liniment for a variety of indications such as headaches, rheumatic pains, stomach aches, colds, period pains, overstrain of legs and muscles along with acupressure.

Seven Star Hammer - Acupuncturist Dr.Mahesh uses a small hammer with seven small needles embedded in the head. This technique is useful for disorders of the joints or associated soft tissues and skin disorders like eczema etc. It increases the blood flow in the specific area.

Cupping - In Acupuncture treatment, suction cups made of pyrex glass may also be used on soft tissue areas like thighs, shoulders and back using suction method. Suction cups are used in the treatment of many conditions. For example, sporting injuries, musculoskeletal problems including back pain and sciatica.

NATUROPATHY

Naturopathy is a natural system of health-care that empowers the individual to take responsibility for their own health and well-being by diet and lifestyle management. It incorporates a variety of modalities such as diet, nutrition, herbal medicine, mineral therapy, flower essences and lifestyle management. It helps in promoting the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of an individual person. Overall in contemporary society, Naturopathy has adapted to fit into our modern lifestyle. The demands of modern living such as stress (different types like biochemical, physical, emotional, geopathic), negative emotions, agricultural chemicals and nutritional defiencies in micro and macro nutrients all contribute to disease or imbalances in the individual.

What are Natural Therapies?

"VIS MEDICATRIX NATURAE" or the Healing Power of Nature is fundamental to the principles of natural therapies. The healing process is activated by inherent natural processes that act to return the organism to a state of equilibrium.
Natural Therapies promote and enhance healing by their ability to assist Nature to maintain balance, harmony and wholeness. The Doctrine of the Vital Force respects the laws of nature. Nature has the tendency to restore all things to a state of balance and order. This is evident in the natural world. For example, the regeneration of a forest after a bushfire as the order is restored. In the Indian Ayurvedic system, health is a state of balance where mind, body and environment are in harmony.
The Natural therapist acknowledges that the human being is made uo of different dimensions. Healing must address the individual as a whole made up of physical, mental, intellectual, emotional and spiritual dimensions. The orientation of natural healing is holistic and acts on balancing life's energies, rather than a specific sector of the individual.
According to the World Health Organisation, health is defined as "a state of physical, mental and social well-being, a state in which a person feels at every moment of living a joy and zest for life, a sense of fulfilment and awareness of harmony with the universe."
Health is not only freedom from disease but an integration of the body, mind and spirit. Measures of health are vitality, enthusiasm, aliveness and happiness. In regard to this, all levels of the human being are taken into consideration.
Naturopaths look at these elements and encourage them all rather than just one aspect to bring out positive changes. Health is not only absence from physical symptoms but an ability and willingness to change.

Massage

During a massage treatment, a range of hand techniques are used to stimulate different parts of the body and specific body trigger points which generally hold tension. This helps to restore and balance the blood flow and energy in the body.
In a therapeutic massage commonly used hand techniques include rubbing, chopping, kneading, rolling, pushing, digging, grasping, plucking, vibrating, pressing and pinching.
Massage is effective in the treatment of a range of pain conditions like headaches, period pains, muscoloskeletal conditions as well as common ailments such as sinnus problems, colds etc.
In fact, caring through touch, Massage has been shown to encourage the release of endorphins - chemicals that affect development in children as well as emotional and physical well being in adults. Massage is a wonderfully relaxing experience and in addition can be an effective treatment for a range of physical problems.

HOMEOPATHY

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that was developed by the German Physician and Alchemist Dr.Samuel Hehnemann (1755-1843). Dissatisfied by the prevalent treatments, he looked for alternate and better forms of treatment. After extensive research as well as experiments on himself he started propounding the principles of homeopathy. The main characteristic is encapsulated in Latin as "Similia Simibulus Curentur" - let likes be cured by likes. Other features of Homeopathy are that the medicine was given singly and the dose was not repeated routinely but only when the patient's symptoms demanded it.

What is the scope?

Hahnemann believed that it was a complete system of medicine, however it has been recognised that because homeopathy is a patient centered therapy it can be used exclusively or as a supplementary treatment in all situations. Homeopathy lends itself to self-treatment, especially in day to day ailments, first aid situations and minor accidents (First Aid kits can be prepared expecially for you by the homeopath). Another area of successful application is psychological problems and the management of mild to moderate anxiety, depression and other mood disturbances. Like any other therapy there are limitations and these will be explained by the practitioner during the consultation.

How popular is it?

It is used worldwide and is growing in popularity as a preferred therapy. Some statistics of the countries that lead in popularity...
France - Over 5000 qualified medical practitioners practice Homeopathy. Fifteen Universities and hospital centres do research on its uses.
Germany - 20% of doctors use it in their practice.
England - Recognised by Act of Parliament available within the National Health Service. 42% referrals to homeopaths come from Medical/Orthodox Physicians.
India - All major hospitals have Homeopathic/Ayurvedic and Allopathic Practitioners at the same status. There is respect for all within the medical fraternity.
Australia - Increasing popularity is reflected by the number of private health funds covering the modality in the extras cover.
Funds covering Homeopathy:
• MBF • National Mutual Health Insurance • Grand United Health Fund
• La Trobe Health Insurance • Australian Health Management Group • HCF

Is it safe?

Hahnemann taught that if the right medicine was given the patient would always become a little worse before improving. This is the so-called homeopathic aggravation. These may or may not occur and even if they do occur they are short lived and never cause damage to health.
The medicines do not produce unwanted side effects-they only produce effects that help in treating the person. The medication is non-addictive, as the small and infrequent dose is required to stimulate the vital/healing force within the person.

What about conventional drugs?

There is no evidence that conventional drugs and homeopathic medicines interfere with each other. In any case, it is undesirable to stop conventional treatment without the approval of the doctor who started the treatment.

What is the consultation like?

The best description of the consultation was given by a patient - "I have never spoken so much about myself and what is important to me. It is like talking to a friend who can help. I can now see/understand how I reached this state of health." The aim of the consultation is to get a complete and holistic view of the patient and thus there is a character sketch done with the information the patient gives and an individual picture emerges. The medicine is then prescribed for this person. Sometimes this picture emerges clearer after a few consultations and the practitioner may change the medicine.

YOGA

Yoga provides a holistic system to restore health. Health is an inner sense of well-being that allows you to cope with life without losing balance.
Medical experts are increasingly recognising the importance of Yoga in the treatment of chronic disorders. The principles of Yoga and the recommended practises help in relating to the environment as well as to understand how we contribute to the problems and solutions relating to health.

What kind of Yoga is it?

Ashtanga or eight limbed yoga was propagated by the Sage Patanjali. He gives great importance to the integration of all aspects of life. Thus, Ashtanga Yoga involves fine balancing using self-discipline in asan, pranayam and meditation. This kind of tuning leads to a decrease in hypersensitivity to external stimuli and an increase in awareness as well as sensitivity to internal stimuli.

Can I do it?

Anyone with a willingness is suitable for Ashtanga Yoga. The teacher has to individualise the teaching by taking each person at their level and help them move upwards. Accepting this variation amongst individuals as well as within the individual is extremely important for success.
