Kate Morris is living proof of the wonders of Bowen Therapy
At the age of 12 years, Kate was hit by a car, landing on her right hip. Many years later, X-rays showed that Kate’s pelvis was twisted, which explained the back, shoulder and pelvic pain that she experienced for many years. Over the years, Kate had also been involved in several car accidents and a couple of skiing accidents, further adding to her back pain.
In 1995, Kate’s Pubic Symphysis, (where pubic bones meet and are joined by cartilage), separated during delivery of her son. (Her labour being induced at 38 weeks due to the extreme pain she was suffering).
Kate was then strapped together for the next 5 years. Applying for a “Mobility Parking Permit” during her second pregnancy in 1997, due to the increased pain levels. She lived downstairs in her dining room for many months prior and post birth of her daughter, as she could not get upstairs to her bedroom.
"I have searched widely to find pain relief, cures, anything… to help reduce the pain I have been in. I have undergone all sorts of therapies and practices from east to west, and Bowen Therapy has helped me the most. I have been having Bowen Therapy since 2000 and it has given me back my life. In early 2005 I gave back my ‘Mobility Parking Permit’ and had the ‘Disabled Parking’ sign removed from outside my home.
That is why I am so passionate about Bowen Therapy and want to help others in pain of any kind."
Services
Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy is small precise moves on specific soft tissue points of the body that relaxes the body, stimulates energy flows, empowering the body to heal itself.
Do you suffer from back, neck, shoulder pain or headaches?
Then this very gentle, but extremely powerful, body balancing technique maybe the answer to your problems.
Other conditions that benefit include:
| neck & shoulder pain | sports injuries |
| back pain and sciatica | digestive problems |
| knee & ankle problems | jaw pain |
| RSI & tennis elbow | hayfever |
| respiratory conditions | hammer toe |
| migraines & headaches | plantar fasciitis |
| childhood disorders | bunions |
| menstrual irregularities | pregnancy |
| And restricted movement in all parts of the body |
Bowen is unique in the field of bodywork. Its relatively few, gentle “moves” over muscle and other soft tissue address the whole body. The healing may occur at all levels as needed physical, chemical, emotional, mental, energetic, etc.
A Bowen session consists of several series of gentle moves through light-weight clothing (not jeans), or on skin and may last from 15 minutes to an hour. The client lies on a bodywork table or, for comfort, in a chair. Most often, surprisingly few sessions are needed to alleviate complaints, whether structural or functional, even if longstanding.
Bowen is appropriate for everyone from newborns to the very elderly and frail. Highly trained athletes and pregnant women benefit equally, each according to need.
Reiki
Reiki, meaning ‘universal life force energy’, aims to improve health and enhance the quality of life. It treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including
relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self improvement that everyone can use.
You have the option of having crystals laid on your chakras during your reiki session. These crystals, presented in an organza bag, can also be purchased from Joyful Healing and Wellness.
Ear Candling
This ancient remedy was used by the Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and the Hopi Indians of North America and is now widely used in many countries throughout the modern world.
The process involves the use of a hollow candle with the narrow end held gently onto the edge of the ear. The flame creates a relative vacuum in the ear which draws out poisons, old wax, residues of past infection and fungus. It will also pull out fluid, right through the membrane of the inner ear. The ceruminous glands of the ear are constantly secreting wax and candida grows prolifically in the ear because it is a dark, moist area - a perfect place for mould to grow.
Australian Bush Flower Essences
Flower Remedies are not new. The Australian Aboriginals have always used flowers to heal the emotions, as did the Ancient Egyptians. There has also been a very long tradition of use of Flower Essences in India, Asia and South America and they were also very popular in Europe in the Middle Ages. Hildegard von Bingen (12th century) and Paracelsus (15th century) both wrote about how they collected dew from flowering plants to treat health imbalances.
This healing method was rediscovered by Dr. Edward Bach sixty years ago through the use of English flowering plants. Today our society and its needs are totally different to that of sixty years ago. There has been a great need for remedies that would help people deal with the issues of the 21st century - sexuality, communication skills and spirituality to name but a few. The answer to this need has come from the Australian plants, developed and researched by Naturopath, Ian White a fifth generation Australian herbalist.

Ayurveda Aromatherapy
Shirodhara (pouring of warm black sesame oil with essential oils on the head and forehead) is deeply stimulating to the nervous system, creating feelings of relaxation. It is great for insomnia, hair loss, to reduce body temperature and for diseases of the eyes and ears. It increases memory and concentration and induces sound and blissful sleep. After Shirodhara, a person feels a deep sense of being centred and connected and calmness prevails.
A Large copper pot hangs form a stand above the forehead, it is filled with 1 litre of warmed black sesame oil to which essential oils have been added. The oil is then streamed onto the head and forehead in a steady flow for 30mins to achieve the full effect of the treatment. Meanwhile the eyes are covered. After the treatment, a warm compress is applied to remove the excess oil form the forehead and head and soothes the client. The oil is left in the hair overnight before washing out. This leaves the hair with a beautiful healthy shine.
Black Sesame Oil is traditionally used with Ayurvedic Essential Oils. It is very rich in vitamins A & E and is an excellent carrier oil as it enhances the properties of the essential oils added to it. It is good for all skin types, nourishing and protective (blocks up to 45% of the suns UV rays), ulcers, wounds, burns and scalds. It also is beneficial in reducing stress and fatigue. The Copper pot has its own properties which are also transmitted into the oil.
Shiroabhyang (Traditional Indian Head, Neck and shoulder massage)
When massaging the head you are in fact massaging the entire body, as the head is the centre of the Nervous System. Therefore the entire nervous system can be calmed down by massaging the head. The brain is the first organ to develop in the process of foetal development. The baby’s soft spot or fontanelle is located at the top of the cranium over the mid brain and it can be seen pulsating in a newborn. It is located eight finger widths above the third eye and is called the “Seat of the Self”. Massaging the head also helps in getting rid of fatigue, balancing hormones and circulation.
Oil strengthens the hair and removes dryness which is responsible for brittle hair, premature balding and many scalp disorders. Oil also acts as a conductor of the energy and aids in the flow of the Prana of life-force, from the environment.
Pregnancy Belly Casting
Belly casting, is the process of making a 3 dimensional plaster sculpture of your pregnant tummy. The belly cast is made using plaster gauze. Your uniquely shaped pregnant tummy acts as the mould and strips of plaster gauze are laid across and left to set for 20 minutes (some call this masking, or making a mask of the pregnant belly). It is then lifted off your tummy and air dried for 24-48 hrs, this finished piece ie the plaster sculpture of your pregnant form, called a belly cast, bellymask or tummymask is then decorated or left au naturale.

Testimonials
“Although I looked like any healthy person I had suffered from increasingly chronic neck, shoulder and back pain due to scoliosis from at the age of 10. I had sort help with chiropractic adjustments for many years, which did help to an extent, but never “cured” my back problems. The pain in my neck and shoulder muscles caused by the scoliosis seemed to be increasing, which was very worrying and was affecting my ability to enjoy work as well. Massages, exercises and chiro were short term solutions for me, and my shoulder and neck pain would come back regularly.
My neck muscles would often “freeze-up”, and it would take days for the muscles to calm down. It was very uncomfortable and as I was only 20 years old not something I really wanted to be dealing with.
So when I heard about Bowen Therapy I was happy to try it out, but was obviously not too optimistic about the results. It was a new kind of treatment, for one thing, and I had tried so many other things before this to help my back to no avail. However, given my situation, I was willing to give it a try.
The treatment was painless, and specifically targeting my scoliosis. I was surprised by the reaction my body had to it though. From basically day one I felt and improvement in my neck and shoulders, which had previously been a constant worry for me for a decade. The treatment was simple, Kate basically applied painless pressure to my muscles, adjusting them so they could adjust my bones. As she explained to me, out bones are held in place by our muscles. I had never really thought of this before, and this explained why previous different treatments had never really worked. They focused on the bones, not the muscles which held them.
As I had had scoliosis for so long, I had various reactions to Kate’s treatment. It was not unpleasant and again never hurt. My body seemed to be reacting strongly to her adjustments, which simply meant it was realigning. I often felt tingling sensations, but these passed quickly during each session, and lessened as the weeks went on.
By the end of my first lot of treatment I was very, very pleased with the results! I had not had my neck freeze-up, and by body felt more in-balance.
However, 2 years on from this initial treatment the results have, amazingly and thankfully, continued. I could not be happier! As someone who literally had a stiff neck and pain for a decade, the fact that I can say that is quite marvellous! Even my friends have noticed how I don’t have to stretch my neck and how I don’t talk about the pain any more.
I give my deepest thanks to Kate for all her help and healing, it has really improved my life. I give her my highest recommendation as the person to see if you suffer neck, shoulder and back pain, and especially if you have scoliosis.”

"I work in construction and 5-6 days a week do heavy labour.
A few years ago I was working on a job when I felt sudden sharp pains in my lower back. It put me out of work for over a week and the doctor prescribed extra strong pain killers. I experienced similar pain again a few months back. Again I was out of work for a week and prescribed strong pain killers. This time I went to a Physiotherapist. The pain subsided.
A couple of months later the pain returned with a vengeance. My partner recommended I try Bowen. On walking very slowly and painfully to Joyful Healing I really didn't see how it was going to help but at that stage I was open to trying anything. Kate put my mind in a very relaxed state and just after a few moves I felt all my muscles relax. When I walked out of there the pain had gone completely. I was amazed! I felt brand new!"

"Kate did an ear candling for me (two actually, both ears). I had blocked up ears which had not been clearing after I had had a cold.
The process was very relaxing and Kate was attentive all the way through. Afterwards my ears felt clearer and unblocked. I enjoyed the experience and will definitely do it again."
